Concert celebration for Hispanic Heritage month

On Monday, October 25, musicians from the Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band, along with the Petrocelli family will host a special concert titled, “Viva La Musica” which will pay tribute to Hispanic Heritage month.

The Monday night concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m., “features a variety of exciting Latin music, including folk songs, ballads, dancing, and instrumental selections,” according to an email about the event.

Solo artists for the evening will include members of the Show Band such as concertmaster Chris McAleer, who will sing Mexican folk songs and “Besame Mucho”; John Knapp, who will perform the trumpet solo on “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossoms White”; musician and vocalist Isaac Gonzalez, who will sing two ballads; special guest artist and vocalist Dr. George Matamala, who will be featured on “Volver Volver” and “Solamente Una Vez”; and percussionist and educator Homero Chavez.

The concert will also feature dancing by Show Band musician Kathy Soderlund. She will perform “Passion” alongside with husband Ken Soderlund on acoustic guitar, and “Tango de Amor,” a piece written for her by Dr. Gabe Petrocelli.

The evening will be narrated by Elvia Rivas, a member of the Ontario Montclair School District Board of Trustees, and Charlene Saenz, assistant superintendent of instruction at the Chaffey Joint Union High School District.

The concert will be held on the steps of the Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium and the venue will offer plenty of space to sit. Event organizers recommend that attendees bring a portable and comfortable lawn chair.

All monthly concerts offered by the OCCSB at Chaffey High School are free and open to the public. Donations raised at the event will go toward the OCCSB and Chaffey Adult School.
