The City of Claremont reminds residents to take caution when encountering wild coyotes.

Tips from Claremont, Inland Valley Humane Society, Los Angeles County Department of Agriculture, and San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments include not feeding coyotes or feral cats; limiting outdoor pet feedings to just one per day and removing the food bowl soon after; ensuring trash bins are secure, bird feeders are clean, fallen fruit is removed, shrubs are pruned, and crawl spaces are closed; not leaving pets unattended; keeping dogs leashed when walking; investing in a protected pet space or escape route for pets in case of coyote encounters; making yourself appear larger during an encounter; and never turning your back to the animal or running away.

Claremont has partnered with San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments to log coyote encounters. Users can report coyote encounters or learn more at sgvcog.org/coyotes.

Aggressive coyotes should be reported to the Inland Valley Humane Society at (909) 623-9777, extension 673. To report coyote attack or bite, call 911. Report sick or an injured aggressive coyote to Inland Valley Humane Society at (909) 594-9858 or to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at (909) 484-0167.
