Friday, March 10

  • This week’s 12:30 p.m. movie matinee at the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont, is “The Courier” (2020). In the 1960s, Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) was a British engineer recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service, also MI6, to be a message conduit with a Russian spy source.   • New York-based dance company Shen Yun Performing Arts is back at Pomona College’s Bridges Auditorium, 450 N. College Way, Claremont at 7:30 p.m. today; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11; and 1 p.m. Sunday, March 12. Tickets are $80 to $165 at shenyun.com. Children under 4 are not admitted. Saturday, March 11

  • The City of Upland’s second annual Lemon Zest 5K and 1K Kids’ Dash takes place at Magnolia Park, 651 W. 15th St., Upland. Check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. The first race, the 1K for children nine years old and younger, gets underway at 7:30 a.m. and entry is $25. The second, the 8 a.m. community 5K, is $35.   • Claremont resident and Special Olympics coach Janine Williams is seeking college student volunteers to spend time with Special Olympics athletes from 9 to 10:30 a.m. each Saturday at Claremont High School, 1601 N.   • The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra presents “a concert for children” at 11 a.m. at Bridges Hall of Music, 150 E.   • At 2 p.m., the Pomona Valley Genealogical Society welcomes speaker and one of Corona Genealogical Society’s founding members Len Enlow for a free and public meeting over Zoom. Enlow’s presentation is “The Orphan Train Movement.” For access, send a request via email to raulncal@aol.com.

 

  • The public is invited to the free Pomona Art Walk at the Pomona Arts Colony, near 100 W.   • Award-winning songwriter Joel Rafael, touted as one of the most natural interpreters of Woody Guthrie’s songs, and all-star Claremont trio The Citrus Sisters perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Folk Music Center, 220 N.   • Students and faculty of the Claremont Colleges will be out this week for spring break. Classes and programs resume Monday, March 20.

Tuesday, March 14

  • Seniors are invited to meet at Shelton Park, on the corner of Bonita and Harvard avenues in Claremont, for a free stroll through the Village with Get Walking Claremont.   • Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day early with a free and public 9 a.m.party at the James L.   • California Assembly member Chris Holden, the City of Claremont, the Kiwanis Club of Claremont and the Contractors State License Board will be on hand at the Joslyn Center’s Oak Room, 660 N. Mountain Ave. Claremont, for a free breakfast and scam stopper event. Thursday, March 16

  • Today is the deadline for Claremont students, grades K through six, to enter theme ideas for the 73rd annual Fourth of July celebration. Each theme must be five words or less and have no more than 36 characters. The student with the winning entry will receive fireworks show tickets, a certificate, a spot in the parade, and lead the event’s ceremonial flag salute. Submit ideas at ci.claremont.ca.us.

  • In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, the Claremont Forum, 586 W. First St., will host a $1 book sale today through Sunday.
