Parades, protests, pancakes, fireworks: Fourth of July in Claremont

The Claremont Club was bustling on the Fourth of July as local families gathered for dinner in the parking lot along Monte Vista Avenue. From there, they had front-row seats to the Upland fireworks display, above, which lit up the sky directly to the east. The fireworks exploded in the sky over the rock quarry next to the 210 Freeway. Fourth of July in Claremont was once again packed full of traditional fun, with thousands of folks taking part in the city’s annual Independence Day celebrations.

Along with Fourth of July staples like the pancake breakfast, speaker’s corner, parade, and the evening fireworks show, was a “free America” protest at Indian Hill and Foothill boulevards from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The peaceful demonstration brought an estimated 300 people to the intersection, below, carrying signs, chanting, with hundreds of passing motorists voicing their support by honking their horns.
