Kids need theater arts
Dear editor:
In Claremont we are fortunate to have many thriving performing arts programs for our youth. From our Claremont High School theater program which has a long tradition of excellence, to the many committed music teachers who offer private lessons, along with the precious local nonprofits offering programs and classes, Claremont is steeped in a rich tradition of performing arts access. And it shows through the talent and the quality of local productions.
Last weekend it was the Youth Theatre Works production of “The Addams Family” that really shined. Featuring a cast of over 50 young local actors and supported by an orchestra of 20 professional musicians, Youth Theater Works sold out three shows at the beautiful Mudd Theater. They entertained hundreds of people in our community over their weekend run. “The Addams Family” was wickedly funny, while smartly shining a light on the human condition. The incredible talent and diversity of Claremont’s young people was on full display last weekend.
I encourage the Courier, and our community, to expand its support for programs like Youth Theatre Works in Claremont. Theater arts is particularly powerful because it is multidisciplinary and touches everything from literature, music and dance, to teamwork and technical skills, among many other things. Kids need a place to act, sing, dance, practice teamwork, and develop technical skills, which are all available through high quality theatre arts programs. Most of all, they need the space to explore their big ideas and share their insights with us. Believe me, these kids have got things to say!
