CHS girls varsity tennis win big, look forward to playoffs

The CHS girls varsity tennis team continues its dominance in the Palomares League with an impressive 15-3 win over the Alta Loma Braves on Tuesday, Followed by an equally commanding victory over Glendora, 16-2, on Thursday.
With the two wins Claremont officially has an undefeated league record at 10-0, 12-2 overall, claiming another conference title.
Four CHS doubles teams took the courts against the Braves and all four went undefeated, sweeping the Braves 9-0 in the blowout win.
Sophomore Camila Fernandez and senior Elizabeth Gonzalez kept their undefeated season alive, winning all three of their sets, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0. Sophomore Martina DeNigris and junior Angelina Alkhouri also won all three of their sets, while only dropping four games in the process, 6-3, 6-1, and 6-0. Sophomore Paige Ruffner and senior Kareen Holstrom dropped just two games across the two sets they played, winning 6-0 and 6-2, while sophomore Kaili Hernandez and freshman Delila Vargas won their set, 6-4.
While the doubles had an easy day on the court, CHS lost three of their nine singles matches, ultimately ending with a 6-3 score.
Junior Sydney La swept her three sets, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0, dropping just three games in the process. Sophomore Irma Garcia won her two sets, 6-4 and 6-1, while senior Alyssa Miao, who subbed for Garcia’s third set, lost to Braves senior Delaney Carrasco, 0-6.
Junior Kyriaki Papadatos also struggled against Carrasco, losing 1-6. While Papadatos pushed her set with senior Sydney O’Neill all the way to sudden death, the CHS player lost the gripping set 6-7. The junior won her second set against senior Ivonne Park, 6-1, adding a bright spot to a tough day.
