CHS cross country dominates field at CIF prelims

Claremont High School girls and boys varsity cross country teams won CIF Prelim heats Saturday in Riverside, easily advancing to the CIF Finals next Saturday.

The boys placed runners 7-8-9-17-24 to take first in the team standings with 60 points, ahead of Saugus, 70 points, Sunny Hills, 73, Simi Valley,80, and 14 other schools.

Running over the three-mile Riverside Cross Country Course, junior Vicente Huerta paced the CHS team with a seventh place finish in 15:35.1. Behind Huerta were Ryan Cowgill 8th at 15:35.2, A.J. Reyes 9th at 15:35.3, Adam Trafecanty 17th at 15:46 and Michael Carpenter 24th at 16:01.

Claremont High School’s girls placed runners 3-4-8-15-24 to take first in the team standings with 54 points, ahead of Serrano with 88 points, Canyon-Anaheim 136, Mission Viejo 147 and 21 other schools.

Junior Sydney Hwang once again paced the CHS team with her third place finish in 17:45. Behind Hwang were Azalea Segura-Mora 4th at 17:50, Alyssa Cantrell 8th at 18:08, Sarah Ayala 15th at 18:23 and Julia Marriott 24th at 18:45.

Claremont teams ran the fastest times for the day, according to coach Bill Reeves. He also rested a handful of runners to get ready for the finals.
