Sophomore Kelly Xu wins second league golf MVP title

Kelly Xu won the Palomares League Championship by 20 shots on Wednesday, claiming her second straight MVP title.

Xu shot a four under par 69 on Tuesday at Diamond Bar golf course and a three over par 75 on Wednesday at Western Hills Country Club, for a two-day total of 144, one under par.

Sophomore Madison Stout took sixth place and a spot on the first team, all league while sophomore Davorah Strober earned an all league honorable mention.

Both Xu and Stout will compete in the CIF Central Finals next week at Los Seranos Country Club.

Girls tennis moves to 9-0 in league

Claremont girls varsity tennis remains undefeated in Palomares League matches with a 14-4 win over Colony High School on Tuesday in Ontario.

The Pack played its final regular season match at Bonita High School on Thursday after press time. The Pack defeated the Bearcats earlier this month, 16-2, and another win will give the team their second undefeated season in a row.

Claremont effectively secured the Palomares League title when they defeated second place Ayala earlier this month. However, with the win over Colony they now are beyond the reach of the Bulldogs and will be the league champs.

Girls volleyball enters CIF playoffs

Claremont’s third place finish in the Palomares League, with a record of 6-4, was good enough for a trip to the first round of the CIF tournament. That game took place Thursday after press time against Ivy League champion Paloma Valley in Menifee.

Claremont loses homecoming game

Claremont varsity football’s Palomares League record slipped to 1-2, with a 42-7 loss to Glendora on Friday during the Pack’s homecoming game.

The Pack was outplayed from the very start, as the Tartans built a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter that they extended to 35-0 by the halftime whistle. Glendora got another touchdown in the third, but Claremont was able to break the shutout in the fourth with a passing play from junior Ricky Murillo to Isaiah Love.

Love had 101 of the Pack’s 149 receiving yards while senior Devin Carraway had 11 carries for 65 yards. On defense, Luke Pruitt and 10 tackles, five solo.

Claremont fans should have more to cheer this Friday as the Pack hosts Colony for senior night.

Webb football loses in overtime

Webb had a heartbreaking evening on Saturday in Claremont, losing 28-21, to Capistrano Valley Christian in overtime.

The teams could not be more evenly matched with both scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. However, the Eagles missed the extra point, so the Gauls had a slight lead. Capistrano Valley scored a touchdown in the third and added a two-point conversion, followed by a Gaul touchdown in the fourth, which forced the game into overtime. The Eagles secured the win by getting one touchdown in overtime.

Webb junior Ethan Caldecott had 15 completions for 281 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately, he also had three interceptions.

Junior Justice Thomas caught five passes for 142 yards and one touchdown while senior Chris Haliburton rushed for 60 yards and one touchdown. Haliburton also got a touchdown on a fumble.

Haliburton was big on defense as well, with 17 tackles, while teammate senior Alex Cardenas had 18.

The Gauls are now 0-1 in the San Joaquin league, 4-4 overall, and have an away game Friday at 7 p,m. against St. Margaret’s at Damien High School in La Verne.
