Volleyball can’t keep momentum

Claremont saw its season come to an end on Tuesday after falling to Laguna Beach, 3-1, in the first round of CIF.

After a 25-21 win in the first set against the Breakers, the Wolfpack looked to be in good shape entering the remaining frames. The second set proved to be tighter than the first, with Laguna Beach edging out Claremont 26-24 to tie the match at one-all. Despite opening play aggressively in the first set, the Wolfpack were unable to gain any momentum after their second-set loss, coming up short 25-19 in the third set and 25-23 in the fourth.

Tuesday marked the final match for seniors Gina Valvo, Janie Feldsher, Annalyise Reynosa and Annalyese Fausel.

Claremont was not a lock to get into the CIF tournament. It needed to win its wildcard match against Serra on Saturday to earn a berth, and it did just that. The Wolfpack defeated the Cavaliers (13-3), 3-1, and were pitted against the top-ranked Breakers. 

The Wolfpack finish the season 14-13 overall and 5-5 in Sierra League play.

Football ends long season on wrong end of rout

The Wolfpack suffered their worst defeat of the season in Friday’s 47-7 loss to Charter Oak. Claremont finished the season 1-9 overall and 0-5 in league action.

Nothing seemed to be going right for Claremont on Friday, as the Chargers held the Wolfpack to a mere 104 total yards.

Senior quarterback Craig Myers accounted for Claremont’s lone touchdown of the day on a quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter. Myers finishes the season with 1,466 passing yards and 15 total touchdowns.

Claremont’s MVP of the season was senior running back Cecil Flemming, who ended 2013 with 1,235 rushing yards and 15 total touchdowns. The 6’ 2” senior averaged 137.3 yards per game and averaged 7.3 yards per carry.

Senior wideout Baron Franklin was the top receiver for the Wolfpack this season, topping 500 receiving yards and notching three touchdowns. Franklin averaged 11.2 yards per catch.

On defense, senior Josh Ferrer led the Wolfpack with 73 total tackles. Senior Cameron Tyus finished second with 57 total tackles. Claremont totaled 12 sacks this year, led by senior Nico Jaffe who recorded four. 

Cross country starts playoffs

The Claremont cross country team will compete in the CIF prelims on Saturday at Mt. SAC.

Playoff action begins for water polo

The Wolfpack kicked off CIF action yesterday against Ventura at Claremont High School. If victorious, CHS will compete tomorrow in round two of CIF.
