Los Angeles County recorded another spike in new cases of the coronavirus, although it is significantly less than the cases announced in the past few days, according a news release on Thursday from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Claremont’s 21 confirmed number of cases has not changed in two days.

Public Health has confirmed 68 new deaths and 1,081 new cases of COVID-19. Fifty-one people who died were over the age of 65, 11 were between the ages of 41 and 65, and three were between 18 and 40. Fifty-one people had underlying health conditions including 40 over the age of 65.

To date, health officials have identified 17,508 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 797 deaths. Eighty-nine percent of people who died had underlying health conditions.

As devastating as the recent increase in new cases may be, Los Angeles County still has a very low rate of infection when adjusted for population density. The county has recorded a rate of 173 cases per 100,000 residents, compared with New York City, which has recorded 1,788 cases per 100,000. Even some largely rural areas such as Coconino County in Arizona has 265 cases per 100,000.

Claremont has so far avoided any institutional cases of the disease, which have been so devastating to residents of care facilities in other parts of the country.

County health officials have not released any demographic information specific to Claremont, however, they have provided breakdowns on cases countywide. Among the confirmed cases 3,658 were over 65 years of age; 7,278 were between the ages of 41 and 65; 5,435 were between 18 and 40, and 335 were between 0 and 17. Fifty cases remain under investigation.

Further breakdowns include: male 8,314; female 8,281; Asian 1,124; African American 826; Hispanic 4,433; white 2,374; and other 984; while 7,015 remain under investigation.

Deaths included: Asian 128; African American 107; Hispanic 267; white 197; and other 17; while 26 remain under investigation.
