Police blotter 10-11-19

Tuesday, October 1

Around $10,000 worth of Marvel Comics statues were stolen from a unit at Extra Space Storage at 525 W. Arrow Highway, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department. Between September 9 and October 1, a burglar cut the lock to the unit and took the statues, which included likenesses of Captain American, Iron Man, Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk. Police are investigating.

Between 1 and 3:30 p.m., a thief smashed the rear driver’s side window at the Evey Canyon turnout, taking a purse containing the victim’s driver’s license, credit cards and around $200 in cash. There is no suspect information.

Around $1,500 worth of items was stolen from a car that was parked in the area of Silver Tree Road and Mountain Avenue. Between 3:45 p.m. on September 30 and 6:15 p.m. on October 1, the unknown burglar smashed the front passenger window and took an iPhone, a laptop and a backpack, Lt. Walters said.

A Claremont man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and making criminal threats. Around 9 p.m., police were called to a home o the 300 block of Carleton regarding a disturbance at the location, Lt. Walters said. While there, police found a 59-year-old woman with “red marks,” and determined a 59-year-old man had committed a domestic battery and made threats. The man was arrested and taken to CPD jail, and the victim did not need medical attention, Lt. Walters said.

Thursday, October 3

Police arrested 34-year-old Devin Thorpe of Claremont after they were called to Vons around 5 a.m. regarding a suspicious person. Once there, officers determined Mr. Thorpe was under the influence, had a warrant out of San Bernardino County and was allegedly in possession of meth in his sock. He was arrested and taken to CPD jail.

Friday, October 4

Unknown thieves broke into a car on the 700 block of Huron in the Serrano housing development. Around 3:30 a.m., the burglars smashed the rear window of the victim’s car and took two Coach bags valued at around $200 and fled. Police are investigating.

Yet another car was broken into at the Evey Canyon turnout. Between 2:30 p.m. and 3:50 p.m., the unknown burglar shattered the front driver’s side window of the victim’s car and took a wallet that was sitting in the front passenger seat. In that wallet was a driver’s license, some credit cards and cash totaling $320. No suspect information was available.

Friday, October 5

A witness in the Colleges called police just before 7 a.m. after seeing 23-year-old Andy Torres of Rancho Cucamonga with bolt cutters and was concerned he may be trying to steal a bike, Lt. Walters said. Campus Safety arrived first, and found Mr. Torres had been advised of trespassing at the Colleges once before. Police arrested him on suspicion of trespassing, possessing burglary tools and prowling, and he was released with a citation.

A Claremont Colleges student was arrested after allegedly getting into a scuffle with Campus Safety during a party at the Smith Campus Center at 170 E. Sixth Street.

According to Stan Skipworth, assistant vice president for campus safety, officers were assisting a “severely intoxicated patient” at the location just after 11 p.m. when a friend tried to lead him away from medical care. When Campus Safety followed, the friend turned and “forcefully pushed” one of the officers, and then tried to “strike the officer with a clenched fist,” Mr. Skipworth said.

Claremont officers arrived to the area in response to a “physical altercation” between two people at the location, Lt. Walters said. They arrested Carlos Rodriguez-Calderon, 24 of Palo Alto, on suspicion of battery and public intoxication and took him to CPD jail. The friend was taken to a local hospital for further treatment, Mr. Skipworth said.

Tuesday, October 8

A Covina man was arrested after he was caught with a stolen Chrysler 300. Police initially picked up on the sedan around 2:30 a.m. near La Verne and Mountain Avenues, Lt. Walters said. The car and the driver, 53-year-old Eugene Davidson, were located at the 7-Eleven at 2055 N. Towne Avenue in Pomona. Covina Police already wanted Mr. Davidson and the car, and they arrived to take him into custody.
