After a big day of very competitive tennis, Claremont High School’s number-one seed doubles team of Ben Stapp and Jason Weisman won all three rounds during opening day of the CIF individual championships Wednesday at University of Redlands.

All five CHS boys tennis players won first-round matches during the tournament, with Weisman and Stapp getting a 6-0, 6-3 victory, and number-two Joey Anagnos and Lucas Rival winning 6-1, 6-1. Weisman, the Pack’s number-one singles player, finished up the sweep with a 6-0, 6-3 win later in the morning.

Anagnos and Rival lost in the second round to Etiwanda’s number-one team, but the other three boys made it to the final round. Weisman lost to Damien’s Ian Habbestad, 6-4, 6-2, but Stapp and Weismann pulled off a stunning 4-6, 6-4 (10-6) win over a team from Valencia.

The Claremont duo will travel to the round of 32 next Wednesday at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Hwang named scholar athlete of the year

Claremont High School senior Sydney Hwang has been named the Palomares League’s female scholar athlete of the year. The announcement was made Monday night during the Foothill Citrus Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet in Covina.

Hwang has been on the cross country and track teams all four years she has attended CHS and has been a cross country team captain since her sophomore year. During her tenure at CHS, the cross country team has won four straight league championships, three CIF Southern Section Division 2 championships and three straight state championships.

During that time she maintained an unweighted 4.0 GPA and will attend Princeton University in the fall where she will be on the cross country and track and field teams.

CHS Principal Brett O’Connor and Athletic Director Mike Collins as well as Hwang’s parents Eugene and Susan Hwang attended the banquet, which also honored 15 other scholar athletes from eight leagues.

“Her dedication and work ethic raised the bar for all of the runners we have in our program,” Mr. Collins said about Sydney during Monday’s announcement.

The Palomares League male scholar athlete is Bonita High School’s varsity quarterback John Paul Andrade. He will be attending Ohio State University to play football in the fall.

CHS Boys Golf

Boys varsity golf finished the season tied for third in the Palomares League and qualified for the CIF championship held Monday at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.

Claremont did well, shooting a 419, the boys best tournament score in five seasons. The top performance came from sophomore Connor Reis, who shot a one over par 73.

In the individual tournament, Reis finished second overall in the two-day league prelims at Diamond Bar Country Club, followed by the finals at Red Hill Country Club. He played in the Central Division championship at Canyon Crest and qualified for the CIF Southern Section championship at Goose Creek Golf Club, which took place Thursday after press time.

Reis was one of 20 golfers to advance out of 131 league champions.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s, mens tennis win NCAA regional

The second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team won its NCAA Regional for the eighth year in a row as the Athenas took a 5-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

The win advances CMS to the NCAA Division III Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 20-22, according to a news release from CMS Athletics.

With the win, the NCAA defending champion Athenas improve to 25-1 and will meet Carnegie Mellon in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals on Monday, May 20. With the loss, the Sagehens end the year at 16-6 overall.

The Athenas will join the top-ranked CMS men’s tennis team in Kalamazoo, after the Stags won their regional 5-0 over Trinity University on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Athenas hope to win their second straight national title after earning the first in the program’s history, a 5-4 victory over Emory at home last year.  Emory handed the Athenas their only loss this season in the finals of the ITA Indoor Nationals on March 3.

The Stags advance to their tenth straight NCAA Elite Eight and will face number-eight Bowdoin in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Monday, May 20.

The CMS men’s and women’s teams, which are now a combined 56-2 for the season, will try to win national championships in the same season for the first time in program history. Emory, Williams and Trinity (Texas) have all earned dual national titles in the same year, but it would be a first for CMS, which has four national titles combined between the two programs.

New youth summer springboard diving program at Pomona College

Pomona-Pitzer diving coach Robbie McLellan has a new summer diving program and youth team, which is open to residents of Claremont and surrounding areas. Students age six and older who are comfortable swimmers are welcome to try learning to jump, dive and twist from the one-meter and three-meter springboards. The program will be held at Haldeman Pool on the Pomona College campus, and no diving experience is necessary.

The three sessions are two weeks each, Monday through Thursday. The first session will take place June 17 to 27, the second July 1 to 15, and the third July 29 to August 5.
