Two Claremont athletes have qualified to compete in the CIF finals this weekend at El Camino College.

Senior Ryan Cowgill placed second in his heat and fourth overall in the 1600 meters. His race against the first place runner was so tight, they were given the same time of 4:16 and the winner had to be determined using footage from the finish line camera.

Senior Kalinda Reynolds also advanced with her eighth place finish in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:02.

Webb baseball

The Webb Schools baseball team lost their second round CIF Southern Section playoff  game to Costa Mesa, 10-1. The Gauls played a strong game with the exception of the fourth inning, when they gave up seven runs.

The highlight of the game for Webb was a home run robbing jumping catch by senior outfielder JJ Cunningham.

“The result was not what we were hoping for yesterday, but JJ Cunningham made the best play I have ever seen in a high school baseball game,” Director of Athletics Steve Wishek declared.

The boys end the season with an Academy League pennant, a perfect 9-0 league record and a 16-5 overall record.

Webb softball

The Gauls lost a heartbreaker to San Jacinto Valley Academy, 5-4, in the second round of the CIF tournament on Tuesday.
