Commission to review plans for new building at Harvey Mudd

On Wednesday, March 27, the Architectural Commission will review plans for a new 36,000-square-foot science building at Harvey Mudd College.

If approved, the proposed three-story building, to be named the McGregor Computer Science Center, will be constructed on the northeast corner of Dartmouth Avenue and Platt Boulevard.

The site is currently occupied by a 26-space parking lot, however the college recently constructed 37 new parking spaces in the Platt Boulevard median, which will offset this loss.

The proposed building has a modern design that aims to create connections between the sidewalk, the building’s interior and the Harvey Mudd College campus by including extensive street front windows and an open staircase that leads from the street through the center of the building to the main campus mall, which is a level above the street. The design also includes a twisting offset between the building’s three floors.

Construction of the proposed building, including the elimination of the parking lot, is included in the Harvey Mudd College Master Plan.

The Architectural Commission meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27 in Council Chambers, 225 W. Second St., Claremont
