A portion of Towne Avenue is closed as Pomona police investigate an apparent shooting and traffic collision Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting was reported around 1:25 p.m. at Harrison Avenue and Towne, according to Pomona Police Department spokesperson Aly Mejia. One male adult was shot with serious injuries, Pomona police said in a release.

Claremont police said in a release that callers reported shots being fired at the scene of the collision. Three suspects were seen running north on Towne, and two were caught in the area of Mural Drive and Grove Avenue in Pomona, Claremont police said.

A perimeter was established by both Claremont and Pomona police officers, and a police helicopter assisted with the search. The third suspect was located by a K9 unit in the rear yard of a home on the 300 block of Fanshaw Avenue, Claremont police said. He was detained without incident.

All three suspects have not yet been identified.

During the search, Pomona police responded to a shooting that occurred on Jayson Court, and later located a gunshot victim at a local hospital who police believe is related, Claremont police said.

Two wrecked cars were at the scene—a silver Pontiac sedan and a blue Saturn SUV. Ms. Mejia said a caller reported around 15 gunshots, but police don’t know how many shots were fired. One resident who lives adjacent to the scene told the COURIER he heard as many as 20 gunshots.

Police are advising people to avoid the area.

Harrison Elementary School in Pomona was placed on a precautionary lockdown, but it was lifted, Ms. Mejia said.

Claremont Unified School District assistant superintendent Brad Cuff said in a release that the Claremont Police Department “has assured us there was no need to lockdown any of our schools, and that our students were safe at all times.”

Towne Avenue from Bonita Avenue north to Butte Street is closed to traffic, while officers from the Pomona Police Department investigate.

The investigation is ongoing. We’ll get more information out as soon as possible.
