Burglars hit longtime ice cream shop twice in a week

A local ice cream shop was burglarized twice in the span of one week, according to police.

The Baskin-Robbins location on 602 E. Base Line Rd. was hit in the early morning of Monday, August 6 and again in the morning of Wednesday, August 8.

The first burglary occurred around 3:45 a.m., where the unknown burglar shattered the front glass door of the shop, police said, which activated the burglary alarm. There was no known property loss.

A witness in the area saw the burglary unfold, and described the getaway car as a black early 2000s Toyota Camry. One suspect was sitting in the car as a second suspect ransacked the business. The driver then honked the horn, which led to the second suspect to emerge from the shop. Both suspects fled in an unknown direction.

The suspect who broke into the shop was described as a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt or jacket.

The second burglary occurred around 5:13 a.m. on August 8, police said. A suspect used a crow bar to smash the glass door, which once again activated the alarm. Officers arrived a few minutes later, but the suspect had already fled. There was no property loss in this burglary either, police added.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect entering the shop and checking the cash register, fleeing once he realized it was empty, police said.

He was described as a light-skinned Hispanic man around 25 to 30 years old, standing five feet, 10 inches tall to six feet tall and weighing 170 to 190 pounds. He was seen wearing a light-colored “cabbie” style hat, a black T-shirt and light-colored pants. He has a clean-shaven face and a shaved head, with tattoos on both arms, police said.

This particular Baskin-Robbins has fallen victim to burglars in the past, most recently on June 17, when an unknown suspect used a sledgehammer to smash the front window before leaving with nothing.

Anyone with information on either burglary should call the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.
