The Claremont Senior Bicycle Group was awarded $1,000 for the largest club paid participation in the 13th annual Tour de Foothills group bicycle ride. The event, which took place on Saturday, featured half metric, 31-mi, metric, 62-mi, and 100-mile routes that ran through several foothill communities including Claremont. There was also a 12-mile family fun ride that followed the Pacific Electric Bike Trail.

Claremont Senior Bike Group (CSBG) had 29 members in the ride, including one who rode the 100-mile route, 11 who rode the 66-mile route and the rest who rode the 36-mile route. Two of the CSBG cyclists volunteered as ride marshals and five additional members volunteered in setting the routes and providing road support for the cyclists.

Students from the Claremont High School Interact Club help to set up the venue on Friday afternoon and handed out ride medals on Saturday.

“The Tour de Foothills is one of the best supported rides you will ever do, including clearly marked routes, well stocked rest stops, and our great SAG support,” according to the Tour de Foothills’ website.

The event is sponsored by the Upland Chamber of Commerce.

Registration fees help to support local cyclists and charities including: SC Velo’s junior race program, Upland Paralympian Samantha Bosco, The Kevin Unck Foundation, hand cyclist Jenna Rollman, Chefs Cycle for No Kid Hungry, Haynes Family of Programs, Los Angeles County Fair yellow bus program, Cooper Regional History Museum,

Dive Warriors, Upland Fourth of July celebration, Upland fallen officer memorial, Upland’s military banner program and Cycling Connection’s children’s Christmas bike give away.

The Claremont Senior Bike Group is supported by the City of Claremont and has 135 members, 50 of whom are regulars, ranging in age from 40 to 95. They hold organized group rides every day except Sunday and all levels of cyclists are welcome.
