Against the odds the Claremont High School girls water polo team is on a roll, winning their first two games in the CIF Southern Section tournament.

After finishing league play in second place with a 5-3 record, the Pack won two very competitive games each decided by a single goal.

Last Wednesday the girls defeated Westlake, 10-9, in the first round playoff game at Diamond Bar High. The game was officially a home game, but the CHS pool is still closed so the game was moved. Juniors Makenna Moore and Lauren Hoyle both scored three goals, followed by freshman Maddie Wassdorp and Senior Alijah Dudart both with two goals.

On Saturday they won the second round game against Yucaipa 11-10 in overtime. Amber Cui and Waasdorp each scored three goals, followed by Hoyle with two. Goalkeeper Charlotte Cheng had eight saves.

“It’s the team that could. No pool, no problem,” said parent and booster vice president Kelly Sandhagen.

On Wednesday “the team that could” finally met its match as the Pack lost to Canyon High School, 10-6, in the Semifinal match at Anaheim.

The girls have much to be proud of, making it to the third round in the CIF tournament with a 22-9 record and will most certainly have a great season next year.

Girls Soccer

Girls soccer is the last winter sports team left in the CIF playoffs with their 2-0 victory over Roosevelt on Tuesday in Eastvale. Juniors Kyra Tisopulos and Elisabeth Chua each scored one goal with assists from senior Mylinda Gomez and sophomore Janelle Gutierrez.

The Pack moves on to the third round with a home game against Royal on Friday at 5 p.m.

Webb scores

Vivian Webb soccer defeated Academy for Academic Excellence, 1-0 on Tuesday in Apple Valley to advance to CIF-Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinals. Victoria Romero had the lone goal. Webb will play at West Valley in the quarterfinals on Friday.

La Canada defeated Webb 4-0 on Tuesday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section tournament at Webb. The Gauls final record is 17-2-3.
