Police blotter 11-18-16

Tuesday, November 8

Edward Perez, 27, from Pomona, reportedly smashed a window of a Chevy Trailblazer near the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Sage around 8:45 a.m. and stole a purse and a backpack. Mr. Perez got into a gold BMW driven by 27-year-old Amber Perez of San Bernardino, Lt. Mike Ciszek said. A witness saw the theft and called police, and officers tracked them down near the intersection of Garey and Philadelphia Avenues in Pomona. During the traffic stop, officers found the stolen purse and backpack. Mr. Perez and Ms. Perez were arrested and transported to CPD jail.  

Wednesday, November 9

A 15-year-old girl was reportedly attacked while walking her dog on the 800 block of Manchester Court in the Claremont Club neighborhood. The girl was walking the dog around 8:45 p.m. when an unknown person came up behind her and grabbed her by the left shoulder. A struggle ensued and the girl fell forward and kicked the attacker in the groin. The attacker then fled on foot in an unknown direction. The girl ran home and called police. There is no suspect information at this time. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Claremont Police Department at (909) 399-5411.

Thursday, November 10

Police are looking for a tagger who wrote pro-Trump slogans in six locations across the Claremont Colleges. The tagger reportedly used a green crayon or marker to scrawl “MAGA” (an acronym for “Make America Great Again”) and “Pepe,” a possible reference to adopted alt-right mascot Pepe the Frog, on two buildings at Scripps College and four at Harvey Mudd College around 11 p.m. Claremont University Consortium spokesperson Kim Lane said the possible tagger was identified in surveillance footage and is still being sought. A window was broken at the Clark Humanities Museum around the same time, but Ms. Lane said the CUC is investigating whether it was related to the tagging incidents.

A Long Beach man was arrested shortly after stealing a bike from a home on the 700 block of Santa Barbara Drive. Mario Reyes, 44, saw the bike leaned up against the house around 11 a.m. and reportedly took it. The homeowner saw Mr. Reyes try to get away with the bike and called police. He was found a short time later on the 1000 block of Foothill Boulevard. He was arrested for petty theft and transported to CPD jail.

A Long Beach man was arrested following a pursuit in a stolen car. Tony Bunma, 28, was found by police to be driving a white Chevy Cruze that was reported stolen out of Long Beach earlier in the day. When officers attempted to pull him over at Foothill and Dartmouth, Mr. Bunma refused to yield and a pursuit began. The pursuit moved east on Foothill and south on Monte Vista Avenue, where Mr. Bunma apparently stopped at a traffic light at Arrow Route. After Mr. Bunma refused to get out of the car, officers smashed the driver’s side window and dragged him out, Lt. Ciszek said. Mr. Bunma was arrested for the pursuit, possession of stolen property and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Saturday, November 12

An Ontario man was arrested after following two women into their dorm room and spitting in an officer’s face during his arrest. Campus Safety detained Edwin Engleton Jr., 21, after he reportedly hopped a fence onto college property and followed the women into their dorm just after 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived Mr. Engleton put up a fight, resisting arrest to the point that he had to be pepper-sprayed. When he was put in the squad car, he allegedly spit in the arresting officer’s face. Mr. Engleton was also in possession of methamphetamine and a pipe. He was arrested for burglary, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.

Sunday, November 13

Police are looking for a burglar who stole $4,000 worth of jewelry from a home on the 100 block of Armstrong Drive. Between noon on November 9 and 1:30 p.m. on November 13, the burglar or burglars smashed a rear door, gaining entry and ransacked the house before making off with the jewelry. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Claremont Police Department.
