Outdoor festivals highlight meeting of the Shakespeare Club

The Shakespeare Club of Pomona Valley will feature a talk by Caitlin Lopez from Ophelia’s Jump, whose topic is “Record Rain and Improvised Crutches: The Trials and Triumphs of Outdoor Shakespeare,” at its next meeting on Monday, February 8 at 2 p.m. at the Joslyn Center.

Go behind the scenes with Ms. Lopez as she talks about the nuts and bolts of running a Shakespeare Festival. A successful performance includes reviewing the long and complex plays to cut text necessary for a seamless performance as well as staging decisions needed for the space. Each year brings new challenges and new insights.

Ms. Lopez is a co-founder of Ophelia’s Jump Productions, and is currently serving as its associate artistic director.

She is an actress and has also directed productions, including Twelfth Night and will be co-directing Othello and Midsummer Night’s Dream for this summer’s Shakespeare Festival.

She is also directing Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which is opening early in February. She also has a special interest in the highly creative art of improvisation, and performs with the Spectacles Improv Engine.

The Joslyn Center is located at 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont. Light refreshments will be served. The program is free of charge and all are welcome.

The Shakespeare Club presents special speakers and programs at 2 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Joslyn Center.
