Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) recently announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care.

The Gold Seal of Approval is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. PVHMC is one of 13 hospitals in the state to hold this advanced certification, and one of only 86 hospitals in the nation.

PVHMC underwent a rigorous on-site review on January 8,. Joint Commission experts evaluated compliance with national disease-specific care standards as well as with inpatient diabetes-specific requirements. Clinical practice guidelines and performance measures were also assessed.

“Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center has thoroughly demonstrated a high level of care for patients with diabetes,” said Wendi J. Roberts, RN, and executive director of Certification Programs, The Joint Commission. “We commend PVHMC for becoming a leader in inpatient diabetes care, potentially providing a higher standard of service for patients with diabetes in its community.”

Established in 2006 and awarded for a two-year period, the Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes Care is based on the American Diabetes Association’s standards of medical care in diabetes. The standards are evidence-based and are drafted upon a complete review of current medical literature, double-blind clinical trials and expert opinions. The standards are revised annually and provide a framework to guide clinical practice and recommendations related to diabetes care in the hospital, inpatient blood glucose targets, written blood glucose monitoring protocols, plans for the treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, patient education on self-management of diabetes and an identified program champion or program champion team.
