Police blotter 7-24-15
Wednesday, July 15
A Claremont High School student attending summer school was arrested for possession of marijuana on the campus. According to Detective Bureau Lieutenant Mike Ciszek, a CHS assistant principal was conducting an investigation of a 15-year-old student that was thought to have brought marijuana on school grounds. Just before 1 p.m., CPD was called to the high school and an officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana after walking into the room where the student was seated. The officer asked the male teen, “Where’s the weed?” and the student removed a small sandwich bag containing two buds from the back of his underwear. The teenage offender was arrested and transported to CPD jail where he was booked and later released with a written notice to appear in court.

A Fontana man attempted to use a medical condition as his get-out-of-jail-free card, but Claremont officers weren’t buying it. At approximately 11:40 p.m., police saw a vehicle drifting side-to-side and twice crossing over the line near Claremont and Foothill Boulevards before pulling over the driver. During the investigation, Felix Gonzalez exhibited signs of intoxication but told police he was having a diabetic emergency. Mr. Gonzalez, 43, was transported to Montclair Hospital Medical Center where the doctor confirmed he was not in diabetic distress. After refusing all chemical tests to determine his level of intoxication, Mr. Gonzalez was booked at CPD jail for driving under the influence and later released on a $5,000 bond.
Thursday, July 16
Claremont police caught a fugitive of justice while investigating an unrelated call. According to Lt. Ciszek, CPD was working on the 1000 block of Butte Street after receiving a call about a suspicious man who knocked on a door and then drove away in a gold sedan. At approximately 1 p.m., the vehicle was located parked next to a yard with an open side gate. As the police watched the yard, a Chevy Camaro with a Texas license plate was spotted driving around the area. Believing the car could be involved in criminal activity, officers made contact with the driver, Davaris Adams, who identified himself with a state of Texas inmate card. A record check revealed Mr. Adams had three outstanding warrants—two from Texas and one from Missouri—that both states were willing to extradite. The 33-year-old Fort Worth resident was arrested on the warrants and later transported to downtown Los Angeles.
Saturday, July 18
An Azusa resident was arrested for battery after pushing his girlfriend to the ground during an argument. Officers responded to the 100 block of Princeton Avenue around 10 p.m. after a couple became involved in a verbal argument that turned physical. The victim told police that her boyfriend of six years, Dominador Dauz, had twice pushed her to the ground after she confronted him about something their son had said to her. The victim complained of pain to her left knee and was walking with a noticeable limp but refused medical attention. Mr. Dauz, 33, was arrested for battery on a non-cohabitating spouse and was transported to CPD jail where he was booked and held on a $20,000 bond. The victim was given domestic violence information and offered an emergency protective order, which she declined.
Sunday, July 19
If anyone’s in need of the cleansing stone Selenite, it’s the thieves who broke into Kindred Spirits. Claremont police responded to the spiritual shop, located at 813 W. Foothill Blvd., after someone broke the front window and gained entry to the store overnight. Once inside, the burglars removed decorative sculptures, a laptop computer, copper bracelets and silver jewelry worth a total estimate of $10,700. The investigation remains ongoing.

The combination of wet roads and impaired driving did not bode well for an Upland man who lost control of his vehicle and took out a city tree along Foothill Boulevard. Officers arrived at approximately 7:30 p.m. to find Casey Steiman standing next to his damaged Ford F250 in the center median near Dartmouth Avenue. A witness told police they saw the 30-year-old man driving the truck in the left lane when he collided with the center median, and a city sign and knocked down a city tree. Mr. Steinman admitted to driving the vehicle and told officers that the rear of his truck “got loose” and he hit the center divider. The Upland man exhibited signs of intoxication and, following a series of sobriety tests, Mr. Steiman was arrested for driving under the influence and booked at CPD jail. He was later released on a $5,000 bond.
Monday, July 20
An Altadena man is once again behind bars after failing to appear in court on a previous arrest in Claremont. Officers first arrested 44-year-old Marcus Wilder on May 12 after he allegedly patted the behind of a 45-year-old woman as she stood on Arrow Highway and College Avenue. The groper was booked at the Claremont jail and later released on a $20,000 bond with a written promise to appear in court. When he failed to appear for his scheduled hearing, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Mr. Wilder was taken into custody once again, this time on a warrant for failure to appear in court, and remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, held on $35,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Tuesday, July 21
A transient attempting to steal a car was caught in the act by the victim and captured by Claremont police following a brief foot pursuit. Jacob Dmytro was inside the victim’s 1993 Acura Vigor on the 400 block of West San Jose at approximately 5:45 a.m. when the owner confronted him. He took off running. The victim called Claremont police, who picked up the 24-year-old man in a nearby Denny’s bathroom after a foot pursuit through the area. The victim positively identified Mr. Dmytro as the man who tried to steal his ride and he was arrested for attempted grand theft auto. Mr. Dmytro remains in custody at CPD jail, held on $25,000 bond, pending court.
