CHS students to get ‘Wicked’ at musical fundraiser

On Monday, March 4, audiences will have the opportunity to see 8 high school theater students from southern California—2 of them Claremont High School Thespians—join with members of the cast of Wicked for a memorable performance.

“Making Magic/Defying Gravity,” a 2-hour benefit organized by the Educational Theatre Association, will be held at Bridges Auditorium, starting at 7 p.m. As the host school for the event, CHS is also providing the crew for the production.

The acting-minded teens will be performing with professionals who are the understudies to 2 key roles in the Grammy Award-winning musical, Michael Mahany (Fiyero) and Carla Stickler (Elphaba).

The evening will also feature a “behind the curtain” question-and-answer session led by J. Jason Daunter, production stage manager of Wicked, and featuring Mr. Mahany, Ms. Stickler and Matt Conover, vice president, creative entertainment and Disney Parks talent casting. The professionals will seek to inspire aspiring thespians by recounting how their high school dreams led to a life in theater.

Admission is $15, with tickets sold at the Bridges Box Office (450 N. College Way) from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. the day of the performance. To buy tickets online, visit http://schooltheatre.org/events/making magic/orange-county. All proceeds will be used towards thespian scholarships.

Claremont Stars to host first golf tournament

The Claremont Stars Soccer Club will host their first Golf Tournament in less than a month. The club fields over 20 teams for boys and girls aged 9 to 18, and has pledged to use the proceeds from the tournament to offset a number of costs including fields, lights, uniforms and match fees. These costs typically fall on the shoulders of players’ parents, and mean that many young people are unable to play if they cannot pay the fees.

Claremont Stars Soccer Club attempts to allow more young people to play on Stars teams by raising funds with these types of events. The Tournament will be held on Friday, March 15 at Upland Hills Country Club, and entry fees are tax deductible. For more information, please contact Dan Whisler at 224-0757.
