Corinne Gallman

Supporter of the arts, music lover

Corinne Gallman, a devoted supporter of the arts and of the Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation, died Friday, October 26 following a brief illness. She was 86.

She was born Mary Corinne Herrick in 1926 in Allegany, New York to Klea and Robert Herrick.  Ms. Gallman and her late husband, Gerald, attended Alfred University in New York, known for its art curriculum. While at the university, she was quite active, serving as editor-in-chief of the Fiat Lux student newspaper and as a member of the Student Affairs Committee. Before earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 1947, she was honored with a mention in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Ms. Gallman remained an active supporter of her alma mater throughout her life.

Ms. Gallman later returned to school, earning a master’s in education from Claremont Graduate University in 1966. She continued to play an energetic part in the Claremont Colleges community, working on the Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation board of directors for several decades as well as serving a term as co-president. In addition to her interest in art, she was passionate about fine music, theater and the Los Angeles and San Francisco Operas.

Ms. Gallman was a lifelong Christian Scientist and chose to spend her final days at home, in an environment of beauty and peace surrounded by friends and the art she loved. Friends say she was an enthusiastic and vital woman who will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held at Todd Memorial Chapel at 325 N. Indian Hill Blvd. on November 10 at 10 a.m., with Mark Ruble officiating.

Donations in memory of Corinne Gallman may be sent to Scripps College Fine Arts Foundation, 1030 Columbia Ave., PO Box 1236, Claremont, CA 91711.
