Police play catch-up with car crooks in Mt. Baldy Road area

Claremont Police have caught a man in connection with competing auto burglaries near Mt. Baldy Road and Evey Canyon. Earlier this month, police arrested 2 other men for allegedly breaking into at least 6 cars in the same area. Despite the arrests, break-ins continued to occur in the canyon area, alerting police to the potential of another set of competing crooks, according to Lieutenant Shelly Vander Veen. At 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in the same location as the other burglaries, a man witness 2 subjects drive off in a white Oldsmobile after breaking into his vehicle. Similar to other incidents in the area, the car’s driver-side window had been shattered. Stolen were an iPod, wallet, PSP handheld game and cell phone.

With information provided by the witness, the Claremont Police were able to track the burglars’ vehicle to a residence in Pomona. The next day they contacted the residents of the home and found Luis Campos, 22, in possession of the man’s stolen property as well as other stolen items. Though Mr. Campos was arrested, the second subject has yet to be identified.
