Blood donors can give, score a goal and smile

All those donating blood on Sunday, May 6 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Claremont Presbyterian Church will receive vouchers for 2 free tickets to a Galaxy soccer game and 2 complimentary VIP tickets to the Laugh Factory.

HUGHES CLOSED FRIDAY

The Alexander Hughes Community Center will be closed Friday, May 4 because of maintenance work by Golden State Water. The center will reopen on Saturday, May 5 at 8 a.m.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL ADJUSTMENTS

Base Line Road: Signal synchronization has been modified at Live Oak Canyon Road, Indian Hill, Towne, Mills and Mountain Avenues. The change will allow signals at these intersections to run on demand, improving the operation for vehicles traveling north and south.

Base Line and Towne Avenue: Video detection for vehicles and bicyclists was installed at the Base Line Road and Towne Avenue intersection to reduce the wait times for vehicles traveling northbound and turning left.  

Indian Hill Boulevard and Harrison Avenue: The traffic loops at the intersection of Indian Hill and Harrison have been replaced and are functioning properly.

Indian Hill Boulevard and Tenth Street; Indian Hill and Eighth Street: Video detection is being installed for vehicles and bicyclists at both intersections. The Tenth Street intersection timing has been adjusted to maximize traffic flow.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA

The Claremont Senior Program will host a Mother’s Day tea tomorrow, Thursday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at the Joslyn Center. The afternoon will include live music, finger sandwiches and other tasty treats.

Guests are asked to bring a favorite teacup and to wear a hat befitting the occasion. Tickets are available at the Joslyn Center for $5 and must be purchased in advance. To register, call 399-5488.

Fourth of July parade entrants sought

The 2012 Independence Day Committee invites Claremont residents and nonprofit groups to be part of the Fourth of July parade by entering an application.

Groups, families and individuals are invited to march, ride or walk in the parade, a 2-mile trek that runs down Indian Hill Boulevard and across Harrison Avenue.

Participants may qualify for an award if the float is decorated for this year’s theme, “Claremont Celebrates America.” Judges rate entrants in spirit and theme, appearance and creativity. Awards will be made in the following categories: marching unit musical; marching unit non-musical; musical float; non-musical float; equestrian; open vehicle (convertible/roadster); closed vehicle (sedan/coup); other vehicle (trucks/special); family or individual; and novelty group.

Community-wide yard sale returns with Crossroads’ help

Those interested in buying or selling toys, clothing, household items, or any curiosities have a chance to do so at the Crossroads Community-wide Yard Sale to be held Saturday, June 2.

The event is scheduled to take place at Cahuilla Park, on the corner of Indian Hill and Scripps Drive, from 8 a.m. to noon with up to 150 vendors displaying their goods.

To participate as a vendor at the Community-wide Yard Sale, please reserve a space at the Hughes Center, 1700 Danbury Rd., beginning this Saturday, May 5, from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost per space is $20, and is non-refundable.

Crossroads Women is dedicated to providing housing, education, support and counseling in a homelike environment to women who have been previously incarcerated. For information, visit www.crossroadswomen.org.

Get tickets to the 5 Second Film Festival

The 4th Annual Claremont 5 Second Film Festival will be hosted by Claremont Community College on Thursday, May 17 at the Laemmle Claremont 5 movie theater at 7 p.m.

The Claremont 5 Second Film Festival showcases short films up to 15 minutes, with some entries as short as 5 seconds.

Awards will be presented in the following categories: best film, most original film, best cinematographer, best actor, best actress, best director, best 5 second film, best short drama, best short comedy, best student film and 

audience favorite.

The festival is sponsored by Claremont Community College, and although not an operating school, Claremont Community College hosts charitable, social and artistic events throughout the year, including film lectures and an Oscar party.

New exhibit at First Friday Art Walk

PermaDirty Project Space at the Packing House will unveil a new exhibit on Friday, May 4, at 8 p.m. at the First Friday Art Walk.

Rather than a typical gallery opening, the exhibit Teen Love, Angst, and Prepubescent Awkwardness will open with a prom to “bring gallery visitors right back to one of the more nervous and exciting nights of their teen years.”

PermaDirty will be turned into a dance floor for the night with music provided by DJs from KSPC and by electronic music producer Rindigo. Prom pictures are available with photographer Celia Sanchez. Admission is a suggested $5 donation.
