Rain and snow arrive, skies clearing Friday

Rain and snow finally arrived Wednesday and Thursday, bringing cold and steady precipitation to the Claremont area. And it couldn’t come soon enough for those expecting snow Tuesday along Mt. Baldy Road leading up to the ski lifts. Even with just several inches, there was enough white stuff to throw snowballs and build a snowman, but not a lot more. With all the rain fell over the weekend, Mother Nature saved the heavy snowfall for above 8000 feet in the San Gabriel mountains. So there hasn’t been as much snow in the lower elevations as expected. Until now.

The good news for those still looking for a winter wonderland, Wednesday and Thursday receive two inches of rain in the valley and more than 2-3 feet of snow above 6500 feet. There could even be a foot of snow or greater at Mt. Baldy Village, with an elevation of only 4000 feet.

The slow moving storm is quite large, dropping in from the north in the early PM Wednesday, covering most of California. By late evening Thursday, the sky will begin to clear, with Friday being sunny to partly cloudy and 53 degrees in Claremont. COURIER photo/Peter Weinberger
