Claremont McKenna College’s Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum speaker series continues Thursday, October 13 with an evening dinner program discussing the topical question: “Should the Electoral College be abolished?” The free 6:45 p.m. talk is open to the public and will be held at the Athenaeum, 385 E. Eighth St., Claremont.

The program will feature guest speakers and CMC alumni Aditya Pai and Ilan Wurman with the discussion moderated by recent undergraduate Nohl Patterson.

“In November 2016, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential election despite losing the popular vote by almost 2.9 million votes,” read CMC’s description. “The result spurred a national conversation about the Electoral College — a distinctively American mechanism for selecting a head of state and of government. Given both its storied constitutional history and evident shortcomings, should the United States abolish the Electoral College?”

Before and after the discussion, event attendees will vote in favor or against a mock resolution titled, “This House should abolish the Electoral College.” Votes will be tallied following the program to assess answers.
