Obituary: Harry Jan Steendam

Beloved son, brother, rock climbing enthusiast, adventurer

Harry Jan Steendam, born on July 31, 1997 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, died at the age of 25 on November 7 at the family home in Claremont.

Harry grew up playing Little League in Claremont and San Bernardino. He enjoyed playing basketball with his friends and father Bill. Growing up his father also took him on many road trips and hikes. This where he found his keen sense of adventure.

During high school he discovered his love for rock climbing and bouldering. He would spend his summers in Portland with his older brother Kasey and in Santa Rosa with his older sister Annie. One of his favorite places was Yosemite National Park, where he hiked Half Dome multiple times. He would take road trips to Yosemite whenever possible. This inspired him to find work in Yosemite and follow his passion for adventure. He would often find solace on the beach, where he would meet new people. He loved helping others.

He is survived by his father, Bill Steendam; mother, Maureen Farrell Steendam; brother, Kasey Steendam; and sister, Annie Cunningham.

“Some wander to get lost, and some wander to find themselves.”

Funeral services will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 3 at Oak Park Cemetery, 410 Sycamore Ave., Claremont, CA 91711. A celebration of life reception will follow immediately at 618 S. College Ave., Claremont, CA 91711. All are welcome.
