Police Blotter: June 16, 2023
Saturday, June 3
At 11:35 p.m. officers from Claremont Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Upland resident Julia Barcelona, 48, on Foothill Boulevard near Berkeley Avenue. After Barcelona pulled over, her passenger, Maria Barcelona, 44, also from Upland, got out of the car and reportedly became belligerent. Officers suspected that Julia Barcelona might be intoxicated so they conducted field sobriety tests which she allegedly failed. She was arrested for DUI and Maria Barcelona was arrested as well, charged with drunk in public. At the Claremont jail Julia Barcelona allegedly refused to take the chemical test so police secured a search warrant. She then refused that order as well, so an additional misdemeanor charge of defying a court order was added. Both women were held for detoxification and later released with a citation to appear at Pomona Superior Court.
Monday, June 5
Police received a call at 5:49 p.m. about a fight in the 500 block of Wayland Road. Arriving officers questioned a 30-year-old Commerce man and a 29-year-old Claremont woman. Through an investigation police learned the woman had a restraining order against the man, and he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of defying a court order. However, officers noticed he had abrasions on his face and chest, and subsequently arrested the woman for felony domestic violence. They were transported to the CPD jail where they were booked. The man was released with a citation and the woman was held for court.
Tuesday, June 6
A woman called police at 8:19 p.m. to report the dumpster in the alley behind La Michoacána restaurant, 450 Auto Center Dr., was on fire. The woman’s husband reportedly saw a suspect light the fire and was able to provide a description to responding officers. A short time later police spotted a man near San Jose Avenue and Indian Hill Boulevard who fit the suspect’s description. However, when police attempted to speak with the 28-year-old unhoused man he reportedly ran off. A foot pursuit ensued, and the man eventually ended up on the 10 Freeway where he was taken into custody. A records check revealed he was on parole. The witness was able to positively identify the man and he was arrested for felony arson and misdemeanor resisting arrest. The suspect was taken to the CPD jail where he was booked and held for court.
Wednesday, June 7
A woman came to the police department at 3:29 a.m. to report an alleged physical fight with her husband had just occurred while their child was in the home. Officers reported seeing visible injuries to her neck. Based on her testimony, police went to the family’s residence in the 3800 block of Lealma Avenue where they arrested a 57-year-old Claremont man. He was transported to the Claremont jail where he was charged with felony domestic violence and misdemeanor child endangerment, booked, and held for court.
Thursday, June 8
At 5:23 p.m. police pulled over Pomona resident Manal Awad, 50, in the 700 block E. Foothill Boulevard for a moving violation. She provided identification and a records check revealed she had a San Bernardino County felony warrant. She was arrested, taken to the Claremont jail, and held until she could be transferred to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
Friday, June 9
Police were called to the Chevron/McDonald’s, 860 S. Indian Hill Blvd., at 8:26 p.m. about a man panhandling at the location. Police contacted Pomona resident Charles Ellis, 34, who provided an identification card. A records check showed he had a felony no-bail warrant and was on probation. As officers attempted to detain Ellis he pulled away from their grasp and tried to flee. During a scuffle Ellis allegedly punched an officer in the face and chest and pushed another. Additional officers responded and the suspect was taken into custody. One officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest. Ellis was arrested for felony battery on peace officer, misdemeanor resisting arrest, the warrant, and for the probation hold. He was then taken to the CPD jail where he was booked and held for court.
Police conducted a DUI checkpoint in the 700 block of E. Foothill Boulevard near Armstrong Garden Center beginning at 7 p.m. and continuing until 1 a.m. Saturday. A total of 654 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and five drivers were given sobriety tests resulting in the DUI arrests of Bernard Jacobo, 21; Jonathan Rojas, 35; and Elijah Clark, 22. Three additional people were arrested for driving without a license, and five received traffic violation citations.
Saturday, June 10
At 12:01 p.m. a woman who lives in the 500 block of Converse Avenue noticed some items were missing from her garage, including some money. She viewed her home’s surveillance video and reportedly saw her ex-boyfriend on the property, although there was a court order for him to stay away. Police located the suspect, Rancho Cucamonga resident Robert Richardson 59, a short distance away and a search allegedly turned up narcotics. He was arrested for felony burglary, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor violating a court order. He was transported to the CPD jail where he was booked and held for court.
Police were called to Foothill Boulevard at Mountain Avenue at 12:38 p.m. to investigate a three-car chain reaction crash. Officers questioned one of the drivers, Jennifer Rivera, 39, with no known city of origin, and suspected she was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested for DUI and taken to the Claremont jail where she allegedly refused to provide a chemical sample. She then reportedly complained of a medical condition and was taken to a hospital. Some time later, she was taken back into police custody and officers then had a search warrant to get the blood sample. She was then held for detoxification and later released with a citation to appear in court.
