For the first time in its history, Hurricane Hilary prompted the National Weather Service on Friday to issue a tropical storm watch for California. The front of the storm reached Claremont early Sunday morning, making it the first tropical storm here in 84 years, according to CNN.

The weather service predicts two to four inches of rain for the San Gabriel Valley, with the most intense rains expected in the California mountains and deserts in the late afternoon today, and a moderate chance of flooding in Claremont with strong wind gusts up to 30 mph.

Hilary strengthened to a category 4 storm on Friday but lost energy as it moved north over cooler waters.

In the lead up to the storm the City of Claremont made sandbags available at its L.A. County Fire stations 101, 102, and 62.
