High school sports roundup: week of September 8, 2023

Football (0-3)
Los Osos blew out Claremont, 40-6, on September 1, for the Pack’s third straight loss of the campaign. The team looks to end its unfortunate streak at 7 p.m. Friday at Henry J. Kaiser High School in Fontana.
The Pack then welcome Alta Loma Friday, at p.m. Friday, September 15.
Boys and girls cross-country
Varsity’s results from the ASICS Cool Breeze Invitational on September 2: Claremont took third in the girls varsity sundown showdown with a score of 150, while the boys placed 20th in their sundown showdown with 495 points. CHS also placed 24th and gathered 650 points in the boys varsity large school race. Full results are at finishedresults.com.
The teams travel to Ayala Friday for a 9 a.m. preseason meet, then to Great Park in Irvine Saturday, September 16 for the 42nd Annual Woodbridge Classic, with the first race at 3:50 p.m.
Girls tennis (0-1)
The team’s home opener against Foothill August 31 was canceled. Great Oak dropped by Wednesday and beat the Pack, 14-4.
Claremont is at Rancho Cucamonga Monday, September 11, then travel to Santiago High School in Corona Wednesday, September 13. Both games start at 3:15 p.m.
Girls volleyball (6-3)
CHS shutout San Dimas, 3-0, August 31 then began Palomares League action with another 3-0 shutout win at Alta Loma Wednesday.
The Wolfpack hosts Glendora Monday, September 11 then travel to Colony Wednesday, September 13. Both league matchups are at 4 p.m.
Girls golf (3-0)
Claremont thwarted Rancho Cucamonga, 196-285, August 31. No score was recorded against Bonita Wednesday. CHS hosted Los Osos after press time Thursday.
Palomares League play begins Thursday, September 14 with a 3 p.m. matchup against Glendora at Glendora Country Club.
Boys water polo
Claremont recently updated its schedule to include a 4 p.m. friendly Tuesday, September 12 at Santiago High School in Corona. The team is then at Alta Loma at 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 for a league matchup.
The Webb Schools
Football (2-0)
Webb came away with a 21-13 road win over La Puente August 31 and aim to keep its momentum alive in Saturday’s 1 p.m. Manzanita League home opener against Nuview Bridge.
The Gauls’ next game is at 7 p.m. Friday, September 22 at Silver Valley.
Boys and girls cross-country
Results from the September 2 ASICS Cool Breeze Invitational: the boys took 18th with a score of 527 in the boys varsity small school race. With only four runners in the girls varsity small school race, the team did not place. Sophomore Nicole Samson, Webb’s sole runner in the girls varsity sundown showdown, finished 23rd at 18:26.7.
A San Joaquin league cluster is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 12 at Webb, followed by the 42nd Annual Woodbridge Classic, 5 p.m. Friday, September 15 at Great Park in Irvine.
Girls tennis (2-1)
The Gauls were dealt an 11-7 San Joaquin League loss at Pacifica Christian August 31 before handling Northview at home Tuesday, 13-5, in a nonleague match. Webb hosted South Hills after press time Thursday, and will welcome Woodcrest Christian at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The team will meet Western Christian at The Claremont Club at 2:15 p.m. Monday, September 11, then welcome Big Bear at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 12.
Girls volleyball (4-5)
Webb was shutout, 3-0, at Capistrano Valley Christian August 31, the lost again by the same 3-0 score at Pacifica Christian Tuesday in San Joaquin League play.
Webb hosted a nonleague contest with Big Bear after press time Thursday. SEED School of Los Angeles County comes to town at 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 12. League play resumes Thursday, September 14 with a 5 p.m. game at Fairmont Prep.
Girls golf (2-0)
Webb overcame Pacifica Christian, 191-256, August 31 to open San Joaquin League action. The team was at Samueli Academy Tuesday, winning 237-310.
The Gauls tee off at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 12 against Vista Meridian at Marshall Canyon.
Boys water polo (4-1)
Results from the Corona Invite at Hillcrest High School: Webb opened play August 31 with a 14-1 demolition of Notre Dame Riverside before dealing Shadow Hills a 20-9 loss. Santa Ana edged the Gauls, 11-10, on September 2, before the team bounced back against Arroyo Valley, 13-4.
Webb opens the Westminster Varsity Water Polo Tournament against Segerstrom at 5:20 p.m. Friday at Ocean View High School, Huntington Beach. Montview League play begins Tuesday, September 12 with a 3:30 p.m. game at Sierra Vista.
