High school sports roundup: week of September 22, 2023

Claremont High School

Football (0-5)
Alta Loma punished Claremont, 34-14, at home September 15. The Wolfpack takes the week off before returning to action Friday, September 29 with a 7 p.m. game against South Hills at Covina District Field.


Boys and girls cross-country
Results from the 42nd annual Woodbridge Classic on September 16: Claremont’s boys took seventh with 269 points in the Division I varsity A race while the girls varsity team placed 20th in the Bob Day Sweepstakes race with 532 points. Runners also took second with a score of 155 in the Division I junior-senior girls three-mile race. Full results are at gvarvas.com/results.

The Pack are at Craig Park in Fullerton 8 a.m. Saturday for the Wayne Walker Invitational, then head to Cedarcrest Golf Course in Washington Saturday, September 30 for the 16th annual Twilight XC Invitational.

 

Girls tennis (3-1)
On Tuesday, Claremont toppled Alta Loma, 15-3, then faced Glendora after press time Thursday.

The team travels to Los Osos Monday, September 25, to Colony the following day, then wraps the month at Bonita on September 28. Each match begins at 3:15 p.m.

 

Girls volleyball (8-6)
The Wolfpack were shutout 3-0 at Chino Hills September 15. Claremont then lost at Bonita 3-1 Monday, before a home game with Ayala Wednesday yielded a 3-2 victory.

The team is at Santiago High School in Corona Friday for a 4 p.m. tournament against TBD opposition. Claremont hosts Alta Loma at 4 p.m. Monday, September 25, then travels to Glendora Wednesday, September 27 for a 4 p.m. contest.

 

Girls golf (5-1)
Claremont kept its hot streak alive with a 208-235 win at Glendora September 14. The team then lost a close one with Ayala at Los Serranos Golf Course Wednesday, 215-216.

Up next is Great Oak at the Temecula Creek Inn Golf Course at 1 p.m. Monday, September 25. Thursday’s home match with Bonita was rescheduled to Thursday, September 28.

 

Boys water polo (3-4)
Claremont bested Upland 13-10 on September 14 in a friendly. Results from the Chino Hills Tournament: play opened September 15 with a 18-9 loss to Etiwanda, followed by a 17-4 pummeling from Hoover High of Glendale. The team bounced back the following day with a 12-9 win over Tesoro, followed by a close 10-9 triumph over league rivals Alta Loma.

Claremont lost to Etiwanda 18-10 at home Tuesday.

CHS is at Los Altos in Hacienda Heights Monday, September 25 then travels to Alta Loma Wednesday, September 27. Both games are set for 4 p.m.

 

 

The Webb Schools

Football (3-0)
Webb trounced Nuview Bridge at home, 34-0, on September 16. Its next test awaits at 7 p.m. Friday at Silver Valley.

The Gauls then welcome Temecula Prep at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 28.

 

Boys and girls cross-country
Results from the 42nd annual Woodbridge Classic on September 15: With 172 points, the boys took fifth in the Division IV varsity A race while sophomore Nicole Samson took second overall in the Division IV girls varsity A race with a time of 18:20.9. With only three runners, the team did not place. Full results are at gvarvas.com/results.

Information on Tuesday’s home quad meeting is at athletic.net. Runners will participate in the Bellarmine InvitationalSaturday, September 30 at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

 

Girls tennis (7-2)
Webb upset visitors West Covina, 16-2, September 14, then fell to Mark Keppel at home Monday, 11-7.

The Gauls are off until Monday, September 25 when Crescenta Valley drops by, followed by Fairmont Prep Thursday, September 28. Both games are set for 3:30 p.m.

 

Girls volleyball (7-8)
Webb notched its third straight shutout win, 3-0, at Fairmont Prep September 14. The team then lost twice in a September 16 doubleheader at Avalon, the first a 3-2 thriller, the second a less dramatic 3-0 shutout. The visiting Gauls triumphed over Education First Academy in Pasadena Tuesday, 3-0, then lost at Tarbut V’ Torah Wednesday, 3-2.

The team is at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. tournament, then host Western Christian Monday, September 25 and Capistrano Valley Christian Tuesday, September 26. Both home games are set for 6 p.m.

 

Girls golf (3-1)
Webb was defeated by Fairmont Prep, 228-252, at Fullerton Golf Course September 14, then followed with a home victory Monday over Tarbut V’ Torah, 235-248. West Covina stopped by after press time Thursday.

The team returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Monday, September 25, with a trip to Vista Meridian, followed by a home match with Pacific Christian at Marshall Canyon the next day at 2 p.m.

 

Boys water polo (9-3)
The Gauls bested Workman 14-3 on September 15, then defeated Nogales on the road Tuesday, 24-9. Montclair hosted Webb after press time Thursday.

The team travels to Edgewood Friday then hosts Nogales Monday, September 25. Both games are at 3:30 p.m.
