High school sports roundup: week of October 13, 2023

Football (0-7)
The Pack sustained a 46-7 drubbing at the hands of Chino on October 6. The team’s homecoming game is set for 7 p.m. Friday versus West Covina.
Claremont welcomes Chaffey at 7 p.m. Friday, October 20.
Boys and girls cross-country
Team results from the 44th annual ASICS Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park on October 7: Claremont took 12th in the Bill Buettner varsity girls 5K race with 317 points while the boys placed 13th with 390 in the XL varsity boys 5K. The junior varsity boys (139) and girls (149) both secured fifth place in their races while the frosh-soph boys were 19th in their 5K with 494. Full results are at finishedresults.com/meets/4621.
The teams are off this week and return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 21, for the Mount San Antonio College Invitational in Walnut.
Girls tennis (9-2)
Claremont came away from Alta Loma on October 5 as 14-4 victors before traveling to Glendora Tuesday and winning again, 15-3. Colony came by after press time Thursday.
The Wolfpack wraps up league play next week at home Tuesday, October 17 against Bonita, followed by a Thursday, October 19 trip to Ayala. Both games are at 3:15 p.m.
Girls volleyball (14-11)
Claremont bested hosts La Serna, 3-2, on October 6, ahead of Monday’s final league contest at Ayala, which yielded a 3-2 loss. Due to Monday’s result, CHS and Ayala tied for third place in the Palomares League and played a tie-breaking game after press time Thursday to determine who will advance to the postseason.
CIF-SS Division 4 brackets will be released at 10 a.m. Saturday at cifss.org.
Girls golf (8-1)
CHS beat visiting Glendora, 199-221, Tuesday at Marshall Canyon, and were crowned Palomares League champs with a league record of 5-1.
Next up is the Palomares League Individual tournament. Prelims begins Monday, October 16 at Jurupa Hills Golf Course in Riverside. The finals are at Western Hills Golf Course in Chino Hills the following day. The CIF-Southern Section Division 2 team finals tournament will be held Monday, October 30 at the River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard.
Boys water polo (9-7)
Results from the Buena Park Tournament: play began October 6, with a 13-9 loss against Thousand Oaks. The Pack then went on a three game winning streak, sinking Villanova Prep, 28-8, on October 6; then Foothill Tech, 10-7, and Bishop Garcia Diego High School, 13-9, on October 7.
Claremont lost at Bonita, 17-11, on Monday. The team beat Ayala at home Wednesday, 13-12, sealing a fourth-place finish in the Palomares League at 2-3. The league tournament starts next week, with the top two teams advancing to CIF-Southern Section postseason action.
Los Osos hosted the Pack after press time Thursday.
The Webb Schools
Football (4-1)
Webb had a bye last week and will head to San Jacinto Valley Academy Saturday for a noon kick off. The Gauls then host California Military Institute at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 21.
Boys and girls cross-country
Results from Tuesday’s San Joaquin League cluster at Avalon: Webb’s boys took the top spot with 43 points; juniors Griffin Suttner placed third in the 2.5-mile race at 13:37.3, while Felipe Murillo (14:23.8) and Finnegan Miller (14:27.3) took eighth and ninth, respectively. The girls secured third place with 96 points in their 2.5 race. Sophomore Nicole Samson led the charge with her first-place finish at 15:08.9. Full results are at milesplit.live/meets/575557.
The teams are in Walnut Friday for the Mount San Antonio College Invitational, with the first race at 1 p.m. Next up are San Joaquin League finals, set for Friday, October 27 at Mason Park in Irvine.
Girls tennis (9-4)
Webb welcomed Pacifica Christian Tuesday and lost, 15-3. Western Christian stops by Friday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
The team is at the La Habra Tennis Center to face Fairmont Prep at 1 p.m. Monday, October 16, then hosts Capistrano Valley Christian at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 18.
Girls volleyball (8-14)
Webb shutout Fairmont Prep at home Monday, 3-0, before Western Christian returned the favor Wednesday, shutting out the Gauls, 3-0, in Upland. The team closes out San Joaquin League play at home Friday versus Education First Academy of Pasadena. No matter the result, the Gauls will not see postseason action this year.
Girls golf (7-2)
Webb lost at Tarbut V’ Torah in Irvine Wednesday, 234-235, before Fairmont Prep came to Marshall Canyon after press time Thursday.
The team host Vista Meridian at 3:15 p.m. Monday, October 16. San Joaquin League Prelims are scheduled for Tuesday, October 17 at El Dorado Park Golf Course in Long Beach. Qualifiers will head to league finals the following day at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.
Boys water polo (15-3)
The Gauls edged visiting Edgewood Tuesday, 17-4. La Puente came by after press time Thursday.
Webb is at Workman Monday, October 16, before welcoming Sierra Vista Tuesday, October 17. Both contests begin at 3:30 p.m.
