Claremont High School

Football (0-8)
Claremont lost its homecoming game, 12-7, against West Covina on October 13, but the team hopes to turn things around when the Chaffey Tigers drop by Friday at 7 p.m.

The Pack then travel to Don Antonio Lugo High School in Chino for a 7 p.m. game Friday, October 28.

Boys and girls cross-country
The teams return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday for the Mount San Antonio College Invitational in Walnut. Palomares League Finals are next, scheduled for Friday, November 3, at 9 a.m. at Ruben Ayala High School in Chino Hills.

Girls tennis (11-2)
Claremont shut out visiting Colony, 18-0, on October 12 before Tuesday’s home game with Bonita ended in a 9-9 tie and had to be decided on games, which Claremont won, 77-72. CHS capped Palomares League play at Ayala after press time Thursday.

Individual league prelims are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, in Claremont, followed by individual finals at the Claremont Club Wednesday, October 25, at 1 p.m. CIF-SS Division 1 team brackets go live on https://cifss.org at 10 a.m. Monday, October 30.

Girls volleyball (15-11)
Since CHS and Ayala tied for third place in the Palomares League last week, the teams played a tie-breaking game on October 12 in Chino, with Claremont winning, 3-2. The result sent CHS to the CIF-SS Division 4 postseason tournament which was played after press time Thursday against Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton. Updated playoff brackets are at cifss.org.

With Palomares League play done, Claremont finished in third with a 6-5 record

Girls golf (8-1)
Results from Monday’s Preliminary Palomares League Individual tournament at Indian Hills Golf Club (par 71): CHS junior Kristina Xu took first in qualifying, going one under par, followed by junior Riley Wang in eighth with nine over par. Among sophomores, Taara Reddy had 86 strokes, finishing in 11th place, Ella Santiago was 13th with a 90 overall, and Kaitlyn Tirona took 15th at 92 strokes. Junior Marisa Vazquez finished 17th with 94 strokes.

Results from Tuesday’s Palomares League Individual tournament finals at Western Hills Country Club (par 71): CHS junior Kristina Xu nabbed the Palomares League MVP title with her first-place finish at just five over par. Junior Riley Wang took fourth at 10 over par, getting first-team all-Palomares league honors. Sophomores Kaitlyn Tirona (7th with 85 strokes) and Taara Reddy (15th with a 98 overall) were given second team all-league honors. Sophomore Ella Santiago (15th at 27 over par) and Marisa Vazquez (10th with 95 strokes) were honorable mentions.

The California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 2 team finals tournament takes place Monday, October 30, at the River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard.

Boys water polo (9-9)
At Los Osos on October 12, Claremont lost, 15-6. After securing a fourth-seed slot in the Palomares League tournament with a league record of 2-3, the Pack began the tournament at home Monday against Ayala but lost, 13-12. The result sets up a 4 p.m. game with Colony at CHS Wednesday, October 25, to determine who will finish fifth overall in league.

Although the Wolfpack will not see postseason play this season, CIF-SS brackets go live Saturday, October 28, at 9 a.m. at cifss.org.

The Webb Schools

Football (5-1)
Webb traveled to San Jacinto Valley Academy October 14, and came home the victors, 43-18.

The Gauls host California Military Institute at 1 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up Manzanita League play Friday, October 27, with a 6:30 p.m. contest at St. Jeanne de Lestonnac in Temecula. 

Boys and girls cross-country
Webb is in Walnut Friday for the Mount San Antonio College Invitational, with the first race at 1 p.m. San Joaquin League finals are Friday, October 27, at Mason Park in Irvine.

Girls tennis (11-4)
Webb overcame Tarbut V’ Torah, 16-2, at home on October 12 before beating Western Christian, 10-8, the following day, also at home. Against Fairmont Prep in La Habra Monday, the team won, 10-8. On Wednesday, Capistrano Valley Christian dropped by and Webb came out on top, 12-6. Recent results left Webb the San Joaquin League runners-up with a league record of 8-2.

Segerstrom comes by Friday at 3:30 p.m. for a non-league contest. San Joaquin League team prelims begin Tuesday, October 24, at 3 p.m. at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. League finals are set for 3 p.m. Thursday, October 26, at Webb.

Girls volleyball (9-14)
The team closed out San Joaquin League play with a 3-0 shutout win at home versus Education First Academy of Pasadena. The Gauls capped league play with a sixth-place finish at 2-10, and will not see postseason action this year.

Girls golf (8-3)
Fairmont Prep handed Webb a 232-241 loss at Marshall Canyon on October 12, but Vista Meridian forfeited Monday’s contest at Marshal Canyon, leaving the Gauls in second place in San Joaquin League play with a 7-3 league record.

Results from San Joaquin League prelims Tuesday at El Dorado Park Golf Course (par 72): Alina Li and Miranda Li both shot 19 over par, while Petrina Ong and Lauren Duffy both finished with 98 total strokes. The four Webb students qualified for Wednesday’s finals at Skylinks Golf Course, which will be reported next week.

The team recently applied for an at-large spot in the CIF-SS Division 3 team tournament and will learn its postseason fate next week.

Boys water polo (18-3)
The Gauls won via forfeit at home to La Puente on October 12. At Workman Monday, Webb picked up a 17-3 win before Tuesday’s home contest with Sierra Vista yielded a 21-7 victory. The team is at Valley High School in Santa Ana for a tournament this weekend; first game is at 2 p.m. Friday.

Webb has two 3:30 p.m. contests scheduled next week, at home Monday, October 23, versus Workman, and then away at Nogales Tuesday, October 24. Edgewood will drop by Thursday, October 26, at 5:30 to cap league play.
