Football (1-8)
Claremont grabbed its first win of the season, a 17-12 victory over Chaffey at home on October 20. The team wrapped up San Antonio League play at Don Antonio Lugo High School in Chino after press time Thursday.

A win at Don Lugo has the Pack tied for the San Antonio League title and gives them some hope for making the CIF-Southern Section postseason, division TBD, while a loss sends them home for the season.

Boys and girls cross-country
Team results from the Mount San Antonio College Invitational on October 21: with a score of 65, the girls varsity team won the Division 1 and 2 team sweepstakes race. Senior L’mio Edwards took fifth place with a 17:58 finish, senior Denise Jie Yi Chen was seventh at 18:06, and sophomore Isla Bulmer was ninth with an 18:29 time. The win was the first time that Claremont has won the sweepstakes race at the historic invitational. Three other CHS teams secured second-place finishes in their races: the boys varsity team in the D1/D2 blue race with 77 points, the boys junior varsity team in the D1/D2 red race at 107 points, and the junior varsity girls team in the D1/D2 yellow race with a score of 47. The teams are back in action Friday, November 3, at 9 a.m. at Ruben Ayala High School in Chino Hills for Palomares League Finals.

Girls tennis (12-2)
Claremont clinched the Palomares League title for the seventh year in a row — and its seventh overall — after downing hosts Ayala, 13-5, on October 19, to complete a perfect 10-0 league season.

Results from Palomares League individual prelims Tuesday at CHS: in singles play, junior Kate Emmert lost 6-0 and 6-1 against Natalie Kha of Ayala in the opening round before besting Alta Loma’s Kendra Cummings, 6-2 twice, in the consolation semifinal round. Meanwhile, junior Catie Yarter was shutout, 6-0 twice, by Steffanie Lam of Glendora to start, but bounced back against Ayala’s Audris Yueh, 6-4 and 7-5, in the consolation semifinal. The CHS juniors will square off in the consolation final Thursday. In doubles action, seniors Camila Fernandez and Kaili Hernandez defeated Ayala’s Shivani Gangireddy and Sharon Park, 6-1 and 6-3, before shutting out their CHS teammates, junior Keyra Miao and sophomore Nika Crisostomo, 6-0 twice in the semifinal to reach the final. Keyra and Nika bested Alyssa Cruz and Jenny Zhang of Bonita, 6-3 twice, in their opening round. Senior Paige Ruffner and freshman Farah Ghafarshad overthrew Ava Hollosy and Tiana Rasin of Alta Loma, 6-1 and 6-2, before the Bonita duo of Janice Sum and Cindy Zhang ended their run after three sets, 6-3, 7-5, and 7-6 (4). Paige and Farah will face Keyra and Nika for third place honors.

League finals at the Claremont Club were rescheduled to after press time Thursday following Wednesday’s poor weather. Results will be posted in next week’s Courier. California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 1 team brackets go live on cifss.org at 10 a.m. Monday, October 30.

Girls volleyball (15-12)
The Wolfpack were sent home after they got shutout, 3-0, at Sunny Hills High School October 19 to begin the CIF-SS Division 4 postseason tournament. Updated playoff brackets are at cifss.org.

Girls golf (8-1)
Results from CIF-Southern Section Regional Finals at Los Serranos Country Club (par 74) Tuesday: Claremont juniors Kristina Xu and Riley Wang both shot two under par (72) and tied for 8th place out of a field of 110 golfers. The pair advance to the CIF-Southern Section individual finals at Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon, held Thursday, November 2.

The California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 2 team tournament is set for Monday, October 30, at the River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard.

Boys water polo (10-9)
Claremont bested visitors Colony Wednesday, 27-4, to take fifth overall in the Palomares League. The team’s final league record, including the two league tournament games, stands at 3-4.

Contrary to last week’s ink, since the Wolfpack finished with 10 wins, there is a slim chance they could head to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 tournament. They’ll learn their fate when brackets go live Saturday at 9 a.m. at cifss.org.

The Webb Schools

Football (6-1)
On October 14, the Gauls defeated California Military Institute, 36-20, at Faculty Field. They wrap up Manzanita League play this Friday with a 6:30 p.m. contest at St. Jeanne de Lestonnac in Temecula. A Webb win in addition to a Silver Valley loss this weekend will see both teams share the league title. Meanwhile, a Webb loss and a Silver Valley win, or if both teams win this weekend, will leave the Gauls second in league.

Playoff divisions are not decided until after the season. CIF-SS brackets for football go live Sunday, October 29, at 10 a.m. at cifss.org.

Boys and girls cross-country
The Webb Schools did not participate in the Mount San Antonio College Invitational on October 20 and will prep for San Joaquin League finals this Friday at noon at Mason Park in Irvine.

Girls tennis (11-5)
Visitors Segerstrom downed Webb, 11-7, on October 20 in a non-league contest.

Results from San Joaquin League prelims Tuesday at Orange Coast College: in singles play, sophomore Anna Park had a first-round bye before defeating Gia Patel of Fairmont Prep, 8-2, to set up a semifinals matchup with Keira Kamath of Fairmont Prep Thursday. Webb sophomore Freya Fu was defeated, 8-1, by Kamryn Giunta of Pacifica Christian in the first round. Sophomore Candice Tang was also knocked out in the first round after being bested by Western Christian’s Hannah Gossage, 8-5. In doubles play, juniors Saira Bhaget and Jasmine Beseth had a first round bye and followed it up with an 8-3 win over Pacifica Christian’s Kate Coulsell and Lyla Gesuale to get into the semifinals Thursday. Juniors Claudia Yang and Kristine Bisgaard were downed, 8-2, by the Pacifica Christian doubles team of Aubrey Callaghan and Charlie Rogers in the opening round.

League semifinals and finals were held at Webb after press time Thursday and will be reported in the next edition. California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 4 team brackets go live on cifss.org at 10 a.m. Monday, October 30.

Girls golf (8-3)
Results from San Joaquin League individual finals at Skylinks Golf Course (par 72) on October 18: freshman Miranda Li finished fifth overall with a two-day total of 181, while senior Petrina Ong tied for ninth place with a stroke total of 193; both golfers were given first team all-league honors. Juniors Alina Li took 12th with a two-day stroke count of 203 and Lauren Duffy was 13th at 204.

Results from CIF-Southern Section Central Individual Regionals Monday at Spring Valley Lake Country Club (par 72): freshman Miranda Li placed 56th overall with an 89-stroke count.

The Gauls begin the CIF-SS Division 3 team tournament Monday, October 30, at Jurupa Hills Golf Course.

Boys water polo (21-6)
Results from the Valley High School tournament: Play opened October 20 with a 12-2 win over Godinez Fundamental High School before Ocean View dealt the team a 14-8 loss. Action continued October 21, beginning with another loss to Ocean View, this time 15-12, before Liberty High School of Winchester sent the Gauls home with a 13-6 defeat.

On Monday, Webb defeated visitors Workman, 18-3, then bested hosts Nogales Tuesday, 13-6. Edgewood came by after press time Thursday to cap Montview League play. Regardless of the result, Webb are league champions.
