Los Angeles Police Department officers have captured the man wanted for allegedly stabbing another man in the chest during a fight on Claremont’s Metrolink platform in the 200 block of W. First Street on October 22.

LAPD officers on patrol at a train platform in Hollywood on Sunday, October 29 identified 41-year-old Phillip Borunda, whom police had been seeking since the attack a week prior, and arrested him for felony attempted murder.

Borunda was subsequently transported to the Claremont jail where he was held without bail. He was arraigned Tuesday at Pomona Superior Court then transferred to Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles to await trial.

The stabbing victim was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries. Doctors were able to stabilize him, and he has since been released.

A day after the stabbing incident police issued a news release asking for the public’s help in finding Borunda, and expressing frustration that the suspect was free despite his multiple encounters with police in Claremont.

“Since 2019, Borunda has been arrested by the Claremont Police Department 14 times, for crimes such as arson, burglary, possession of stolen property, and drug offenses. Borunda is currently out of custody awaiting arraignment for an arson arrest due to the Los Angeles County Bail Schedules and Pre-arraignment Release Protocols,” read the release.
