Incumbent California Democrat Judy Chu made a strong showing on Super Tuesday, winning her 28th Congressional District primary race with 60.5% of the vote with 69% of the ballots counted. Republican challenger April Verlato was second with 35.4%. Chu was particularly strong in Los Angeles County, with Verlato taking San Bernardino County. Chu and Verlato will face off in the November 5 general election.

Claremont City Council member Jed Leano finished fourth in his primary bid for the California State Assembly’s 41^stDistrict, garnering 13% of the vote with 74% of the ballots counted. The top two candidates, Republican Michelle Del Rosario Martinez, with 42%, and Democrat John Harabedian, 30%, will face each other in November.

Democrat Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey won both primary races being held to determine who will replace the late Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate — one for the six-year Senate term beginning January 3, 2025, the other for the remainder of current Senator Laphonza Butler’s term through January 3, 2025. At press time longtime congressman Schiff had a slim lead over political newcomer and former LA Dodgers star Garvey, 33.3% to 32.3%, with 53% of the votes counted. For the interim term, Garvey leads Schiff, 34.4% to 30.9%, again with 53% of the votes counted.

Schiff and Garvey will go head-to-head on the November 5 ballot for both races.
