Grandfather, U.S. Army veteran, financial planner, volunteer

Bob Redick died March 22, 2023 “following a valiant battle with Covid pneumonia,” his family shared. “As his niece said, ‘The loss is palpable, leaving an empty space in our lives once filled with humor, laughter and grace.’

“Bob was a man of many words and stories-always entertaining, usually humorous,” his family added. “He was a man of true integrity with a passion for life, learning and service. He loved and was loved by family, friends, and clients, all of whom he considered family as time passed,”

Born August 7, 1947, he loved life and was a man of infinite curiosity, pursuing several careers during his long working life. He was a patriot, proud to be an American and grateful to live in America. He joined the U.S. Army after his freshman year at the University of Tulsa, where he had been studying Renaissance art history, and soon found himself in Vietnam, serving through the Tet Offensive in 1968. “Given a compassionate reassignment — that always made him laugh — the army sent him to northern Italy, where he finished his obligation,” his family said.

In 1971, he and wife June came to California to finish their educations. He attended Cal State Long Beach, where he majored in industrial design and worked as a student assistant. He was soon hired full time as university art director, receiving numerous awards for his graphic arts, fine arts, and industrial designs.

Tiring of the commute, he took a job with General Dynamics in Pomona in the marketing department until he finished the two projects for which he was hired. “With a solid portfolio, he opened his own ad agency and soon had a long list of impressive clients,” his family said. He began his final career as a financial advisor around 1985, earning his certified financial planner designation in 1990.

“Bob was a great believer in community service and everyone’s ability to contribute their unique talents,” his family said. “He created identity packages for several nonprofit groups, but Rotary was his service club, living the motto ‘service above self.’ He was a longtime supporter of Upland Rotary, becoming a member January 11, 2004 and leading the club to an outstanding year as president in 2011-2012.

“Bob had a long and full life and will be missed.”

He leaves his wife of 55 years, June; daughter Kristin Redick; grandson Darby Costello; stepsister Charla Gordon; and many loving in-laws, nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his sister Patricia; parents Earl N. and Bonnie Jean (Landram) Redick Hawkins; and stepfather Charles B. Hawkins.

He was honored in an appreciation of life service on April 20, 2023 at Padua Hills Theatre.
