Claremont Hills Wilderness Park guests are warned to be cautious when visiting as animals such as bears, deer, bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions will become more active as warmer days approach. Snakes also more active between April and October and, on hot days can hide under rocks and in holes.

Park rangers remind all that if you encounter wildlife, remain calm, stand tall, back away slowly, and do not engage or try to get closer to the animal. While hiking, make noise to alert all animals of your presence, keep dogs on a leash next to you, and be cautious of your surroundings. Parkgoers are also reminded to always look ahead, watch where you step, avoid going off trail, have an emergency plan, and be aware of where you place your hands and feet.

If bitten by a snake, stay calm and try to identify the species to determine if it is venomous. If so, seek medical attention as quickly as possible.
