Budding CHS filmmakers honored

Students from Claremont High School’s advanced video production class received high honors in the 2024 Directing Change Program and Film Contest. Films were pre-screened by the Directing Change team and evaluated by a panel of regional and statewide judges.

First place honors in the Tri-City region’s mental health category, which included a $500 prize, went to Hudson Colvin, Sebastien Brusselle, and Angelique Wiesner’s “Piecing It Together,” a public service announcement film that used the metaphor of a puzzle to depict the complexities of mental health. Their victory advanced them to the statewide competition. “First Step,” a film by Eli Myers and Lindsey Olivo that explored how depression can affect anyone, won second and $250. Nora Campbell and Naomi Flowers earned second place and $250 in the suicide prevention category with “I Can.”

The films are viewable at cusd.claremont.edu. All winning films from other categories and regions are featured at directingchangeca.org/2024-awards-ceremony. The schools associated with the first place regional films, such as “Piecing It Together,” received a trophy. Films may also be integrated into the statewide suicide prevention awareness campaign.

The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite films in each award category and to RSVP for the 12th annual Directing Change Film Contest Awards Ceremony at The United Theatre on Broadway, 929 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. It will include film screenings and remarks from guest speakers and filmmakers. CHS student athletes commit to colleges

Claremont High School student-athletes committed to various schools for spring signing day on May 8:

Football player Grant Walsh committed to Pomona College; tennis player Caleb Settles to Claremont McKenna College; cross-country runners Emily Noyes inked with Vanguard University, and Angelina Diaz signed with California Lutheran University; softballers Alyssa Valdez with Simpson University, Sara Cornell with Dominican University, Kacie Gossett with Concordia, and Jacqueline Fausto with La Harbor College.

Other athletes included Lukas Gamans, University of Redlands; Eric Ott, Denison University; Alexa Gossett, Seattle Pacific University; Denise Chen, Claremont McKenna College; and L’Mio Edwards, University of Pennsylvania, for track and field. In soccer: Alex Singleton, University Of La Verne; Wyatt Ponting, University of California, Riverside; Gabby Flores, Chico State; Isabella Salas, Rome City Institute; and Miguel Rodas, Azusa Pacific University.

Slime day at Condit

Condit Elementary School students who raised the highest pledges per mile during the Condit Spring Fun Run recently had the honor of sliming outgoing longtime Principal Christine Malally and Parent Faculty Association President Randy Lopez.
