Mother, athlete, lifelong fitness enthusiast

“Lisa Bertrand, our very own energizer bunny, passed away June 9 at her home in Oceanside, California after 68 action packed trips around the sun,” her family shared.

Born October 16, 1955 in Pomona, and raised in Claremont, Lisa was a 1973 graduate of Claremont High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from California State University, Long Beach. The middle child of five, “Lisa loved attention and made sure she deserved it,” her family said.

She was a gifted athlete, starting with ballet at 3. She danced until she discovered gymnastics, in which she eventually excelled at the college level. “She wowed everyone with her skills on the balance beam, and showcased her enthusiasm and athleticism in floor exercises,” her family added.

She held senior management positions for many years with YMCA locations in Orange County, Whittier, and Downey. She later had her own fitness consulting business and developed programs for individuals and organizations. “As a personal trainer, she had an uncanny ability to motivate the most resistant of clients,” her family said. “Fitness was a huge part if her life, so it is no surprise that she was also a competitive body builder.” She also completed several road bicycle races with her husband, Steve, after turning 60.

In her free time she loved to paint, paddle board, ski, hike, sail, dance, cook, bike ride, laugh, eat fine food, and enjoy a nice glass of wine. “Lisa was the queen of chaos, and excelled when faced with conflicting activities,” her family added. “She was happiest when she was moving at 100 mph, her personal version of productive hyperactivity. Lisa always had a sparkle in her eyes and an unbelievably positive outlook, even as ALS ravaged her body. She never let the disease take away her beautiful smile or her will to live. Her Catholic faith and unwavering spirituality were a source of strength these last few years and throughout her life. Lisa was sensitive and kind, compassionate and lovable. She kept our spirits up and loved us deeply. She always made us laugh, encouraged us to not take things too seriously, and to live each day with a ‘Go for it’ attitude.

“Lisa’s three children were her pride and joy. She was that mom you could hear cheering louder than anyone else from the sidelines. Always their biggest supporter, she was so proud and was grateful that she had close relationships with each of them. She loved all of their friends and celebrated their milestones as if they were her own kids.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Suzanne Frampton.

She is survived by her husband Steve; sons Ian Armond and his wife Leilani, and Shane Baumann; and daughter, Lauren Baumann. She is also survived by her siblings Christine Mistretta and her husband Orlando, Michael Frampton and his wife Kim, Karen Coleman and her husband Allen, and Judy Gonzalez and her husband Larry. She was an adoring auntie to 11 nieces and nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews, “who all loved her dearly,” her family said.

“Lisa had countless wonderful friends who meant so much to her,” her family continued. “A special thank you to Lisa’s amazing team of caregivers who made her smile and laugh, we are so grateful to them. Lisa’s children have chosen to dedicate a park bench as a lasting memorial to her boundless energy and love of the outdoors. Donations will be graciously welcome.”

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 21 at Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside, CA 92057, with a reception to follow at Oceana South Community Center, 3645 Dearborn St., Oceanside, CA 92057.
