Friday, July 5
- The free war and existentialism book club meets at the Joslyn Center, 660 N. Mountain Ave., Claremont, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. the first Friday of each month. July’s book is “The Pale King” by David Foster Wallace.
- The first Friday of the month is pay what you can day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, 399 N. Garey Ave., Pomona. Info is at amoca.org.

- Musician Paul Rodriguez plays a free and open to the public live set from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Crafts, 5131 Carnelian St., Rancho Cucamonga. Open Mic at the Maloof for poets, musicians, and stand-up comics follows through 2 p.m. Art by Alchemist Studio will be on sale until 3 p.m.

- Ophelia’s Jump Productions mounts “The Knight of the Burning Pestle” to open its annual Midsummer Shakespeare Festival at 8 p.m. at Pomona College’s Sontag Greek Theatre, near 300 E. Bonita Ave., Claremont. “The Knight of the Burning Pestle” returns July 13, 19 and 21. “La Tempestad” will be performed July 12, 14, 18, and 20.
