Watch out! Tree limbs drop during summer

Trees draw up water during the day and inevitably release that moisture into the air through their leaves via a process called evapotranspiration, according to a June 25 web post from the City of Claremont.

However on a hot day or during a sudden drop in temperature, trees may not get the opportunity to release that moisture, causing a buildup of water weight that can cause a limb to drop. As the weather warms over summer, limbs will begin to fall more frequently around the City of Trees.

Small limbs can be placed in the green waste container. Medium sized limbs, if they do not fit in a green waste container, should be pulled aside to allow for pedestrian and vehicle travel. Notice of large limbs that cannot be easily moved or are blocking the street, sidewalk, or access to private property should be phoned in immediately at (909) 399-5431 or emailed to trees@ci.claremont.ca.us.

When reporting, be sure to note location, approximate size (length and diameter), whether it is blocking a right-of-way, and if the limb has caused injuries or property damage. Contact information is appreciated in case follow-up is necessary.
