San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team, the volunteer search and rescue team overseen by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, is recruiting new members. SDMRT has served Eastern Los Angeles County, the San Gabriel Mountains and surrounding areas since 1955.

Applications for the class of 2025 are due Friday, October 18.

The team does search and rescue missions for missing, trapped, or injured hikers and car accident victims in the mountains; provides evacuation assistance during fires and floods; and rescue missions in technical situations. Members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and have the opportunity to become reserve deputy sheriffs and emergency medical technicians.

No experience is needed and training is provided. Interested applicants must be at least 21, in good health, be a full-time student or have steady employment, and be able to pass a background investigation. Mountaineers should also be able to work well under intense pressure, and display endurance, integrity, and a commitment to a rigorous training program and ongoing training.

“Team members continuously train in search and tracking, mountaineering, climbing, rappelling, map and compass usage, helicopter extraction and other types of evacuation techniques, snow and ice rescue, swift-water rescue, and more,” a news release read.

Informational meetings will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 12, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, at the Mountain Rescue Station, 114 E. First St., San Dimas.
