Obituary: Elaine Newton

Great-grandmother, volunteer, longtime School of Theology employee

Elaine Newton was born June 1, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland and died October 20, in Pomona.

Elaine attended local schools in Baltimore and graduated from Bard Avon Secretarial College in 1954. She worked as an executive secretary at Martin Marietta in Baltimore where she met Dick Newton. They married in January 1966 in West Covina. One year later, Elaine adopted Dick’s four children from his first marriage: Scott Richard, Gayle Elizabeth, Jeffrey David, and Mark Douglas.

The Newton family moved to Claremont in 1968. She worked part-time in various secretarial positions at the children’s schools and at the Methodist Church office. Then, in 1985 she began working for the School of Theology. After 17 1/2 years at the School of Theology, she retired in 2002.

The couple moved to Mt. San Antonio Gardens in 2013. No stranger to serving her community, she participated in Meals on Wheels, was a member of Children’s Home Society, and served as president of the Claremont Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Children’s Fund, West End Auxiliary, PEO, Chapter PR, the Mt. San Antonio Gardens PEO group, the Northwoods group of PEO in Wisconsin, and an associate member of Assistance League.

Biking, golf, and skiing were some of her favorite activities, along with quilting, embroidering, and knitting. She enjoyed bridge and loved to cook.

“Elaine loved her family, friends, and their summer home on Turtle Lake in Wisconsin, where they spent June through September for 25 years,” her family shared. She was chairman of the quilting committee at her church and was also a member of the Winchester Women’s Civic Club.

She is survived by her husband Dick; her four children and their spouses; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

“She will be missed by all,” her family added.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 8 at Mt. San Antonio Gardens Assembly Room, 900 Harrison Ave., Pomona, CA 91767.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Mt. San Antonio Gardens Homeship Fund at msagardens.org/giving.
