Election updates: Schiff, Chu in, Gascón out

U.S. Senate

After 23 years in the House of Representatives, Adam Schiff has been elected to the U.S. Senate. The 64-year-old Democrat has won both of his races against political newcomer Steve Garvey — to finish out Laphonza Butler’s term through January 3, 2025, and the full term contest through 2031. With 53% of votes counted, Schiff has 5,468,346 votes, or 57% of those cast, to Garvey’s 4,080,541, 43%.

U.S. House of Representatives 28th District

With 62% of ballots counted, Democrat Judy Chu has defeated April Verlato in the race for the Claremont inclusive 28th District of the U.S. House of Representatives, with 130,519 votes against Verlato’s 65,993.

California State Assembly District 41

Democrat John Harabedian appears to have beaten Republican Michelle Del Rosario Martinez for California State Assembly District 41, which includes Claremont. Harabedian is in front 58% to 42%, 94,899 to 67,552, with 63% of votes counted.

LA County District Attorney

With 60% of votes counted, Nathan Hochman has scored a decisive victory against incumbent LA County District Attorney George Gascón, 61% to 39%, 1,421,207 to 891,264.

  • Proposition 32: No leads, 4,876,298 (52%) to 4,498,496, with 53% of votes counted.
  • Proposition 33: Failed, 5,707,892 (62%) to 3,561,177 (39%), with 52% of votes counted.
  • Proposition 34: Yes leads, 4,636,447 (51%) to 4,364,016 (49%), with 51% of votes counted.
  • Proposition 35: Passed, 6,169,885 (67%) to 3,070,861 (33%), with 52% of votes

counted.
