Obituary: Lorraine Rita Freese

Great-grandmother, volunteer, long-time Claremont resident

Lorraine Freese, 91, died peacefully in her home with family on November 17. Born August 12, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to Matt and Evelyn Houghton, Lorraine grew up in New York before relocating to California in 1952.

In California, she met her first husband, Ralph Higgins, and they started a family in Fullerton. In 1967, she married her second husband, Purvan Freese, and together they settled in the Pomona-Claremont area, where they made their home.

She worked for several companies throughout her life, including General Dynamics, PennySaver, and Montgomery Ward, among others. She was also a devoted member of her community, actively participating in numerous organizations, including Sweet Adelines, the Women’s Club, and various book clubs. She was also a long-time member and sponsor in the Alcoholics Anonymous community, offering support and guidance to many others.

Family was at the heart of her life. She made it a point to gather her entire family on the last Sunday of every month for her favorite, “family day.” She also enjoyed spending time at vacation homes in Mt. Baldy, Dana Point, and Palm Springs. She loved long walks, bus tours, and socializing in Claremont Village, and frequently visited the botanical gardens and enjoyed morning coffee with friends at Euro Café.

“Lorraine was deeply devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending countless sporting events, plays, art exhibitions, and school activities,” her family shared. “Her radiant smile, positive outlook, and generous spirit were easily recognized by all who knew her. A life well lived and active until just weeks prior to her passing, she continued to enjoy her passions and connections with loved ones.”

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ralph Higgins and Purvan Freese; sons, Brett and Randy Higgins; and brothers, Charles and Matt Houghton.

She is survived by sons Rhett Higgins (wife Janet) and Mark Freese (wife JoAnn); sisters Barbara Zimmerman (husband Charlie) and Denise Lorge; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A private family celebration was held at her home on December 1, in accordance with her wishes.

“She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her,” her family added.
