Driver in tragic car crash due in court Friday

Pomona resident Rome Cornell, 36, the driver involved in a November 16 traffic collision in Upland that left three people dead, including a Claremont High School student, was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers Wednesday and charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, according to CHP spokesperson Rodrigo Jimenez.

Cornell suffered major injuries in the early morning crash. He was released from Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center on December 7.

He was transferred to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga following his December 18 arrest, with his bail set at $1,050,000. He is due to appear in Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court on Friday.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m. November 16 when Cornell rear-ended a big rig traveling east in the slow lane of the 210 Freeway east of Base Line Road in Upland. Cornell exited the vehicle after the crash before it became engulfed in flames, Jimenez said. After fire personnel arrived and extinguished the blaze, a man and two boys were found in the car and pronounced dead.
