Karl Benjamin’s 100th sparks ‘Benjamania’

Karl Benjamin, the late Claremont artist and pioneer of the hard-edge art style, would have turned 100 this year and a number of museums in the region are celebrating.
Claremont Lewis Museum of Art, 200 W. First St., is showing “Complications in Color” through November 16 from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays, noon to 7 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Tickets and info are at clmoa.org/visit. Claremont Graduate University’s David Pagel leads a free gallery tour of the exhibit at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 9.
“It’s All About the Benjamins” is up through August 23 at Claremont Graduate University’s East and Peggy Phelps Galleries, 251 E. 10th St., free and open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
Louis Stern Fine Arts, 9002 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, opens “Karl Benjamin: A Centennial Exhibition,” September 20, running through November 1. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
“The Hard-Edged Genius of Karl Benjamin: Selections from the Family Collection,” opens October 2 at Chaffey Community Museum of Art, 217 S. Lemon Ave., Ontario, running through January 11, 2026. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Finally, The Ginger Elliott Center at Garner House, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd, Claremont, opens “Karl Benjamin: His Students’ Work 1953 – 1963” on November 15, running through December 13. Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
